Youngest Ever Chess Champion - newguy - 12-12-2024
18-yr-old Gukesh Dommaraju has just become the youngest world chess champion of all time by defeating Ding Liren in the 14th and final classical time control game of the match.
He shattered the record held by Garry Kasparov, who was 22 when he won his first world championship.

That's outstanding for Gukesh. That said, with Magnus Carlsen out of the regular cycle, the world chess championship feels ..... somewhat diminished. Carlsen has essentially pulled a Fischer.

agreed......Carlsen got bored after winning 5 world championships in a row. maybe this will rouse his interest enough to compete in the next Candidates tournament.

The Carlson comparison with Fischer isn't accurate (IMHO).
Carlson became disinterested in the chess championship as it is currently structured. He remains heavily involved and competes regularly in most other Chess formats and (last I checked) had the highest rating in Rapid and Blitz. He's also rated highest in classical in some measures. For comparison, Gukesh was 8th in the FIDE ratings earlier this year, ~70 points below Carlson who remains in the top position.

Magnus' patience with FIDE has finally run out. as other GM's have said, FIDE is an organization run by tournament directors, for tournament directors. there's no way they would have done what they did to him if he weren't involved with freestyle chess, which FIDE feels threatened by.

if Magnus played Gukesh in a match with classical time controls, Magnus would probably be a slight favorite. i really hope he plays the next Candidates.
In a single game Magnus would be a slight favorite - about 55%. In a 14 game match he would have been a much heavier favorite - about 80%. And that is just based on the difference in ELO. This would have been Magnus' 6th match so he really knows this format. They don't really play this format in any other context. He also knows how to handle the pressure. I would put him as a very heavy favorite.

Some more chess news:
Junior Carissa Yip has had an eventful fall:
First, playing Board 2 for the US olympic team she helped lead the team to a bronze medal (outscoring our ranking) by capturing an individual gold medal
Second, she captured her third US womans chess championship
Third, she moved up to be currently ranked the #1 US woman's chess player (#36 in the world)
and Fourth she was the top US woman in the recent FIDE world blitz championship (top 8)
Currently the Stanford team is playing in the Pan Am Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship and seeded 7th. It looks like we have picked up a couple of strong Grandmasters the past few years (Carissa is playing on our third board--each team plays four players per round, best of four wins the match, total points affects tiebreaks). We won our first couple of matches but barely lost to a strong team in round three. It's a six round tournament with the top 4 teams advancing to a final four. My guess is that we will likely fall just short (the top 6 teams are really strong and recruit internationally) but it's fun to see us doing well.

By the way, Magnus and FIDE came to an agreement over wearing jeans and Magnus returned to the New York Blitz tournament wearing denim again 24 hours after he left, eventually taking Gold.
Eventful week for the man as he then got married in Oslo 24 hours later.
