WBB: Stanford 63 SMU 67 - 81alum - 01-01-2025

Preview:

On January 2, 2025, Stanford WBB is still looking for its first road win and its first conference win.  We take on SMU and this may be our best opportunity to get the season back on track.

SMU is neither a juggernaut nor is it a weak team.  They are 8-5 and are on a three game winning streak.  Massey has them at 103.  Their most impressive win was over 12-2 Texas Tech, so they have shown themselves capable of beating a top team.  But they lost their only conference game so far, to Florida State.  Last year they were 14-16 overall.

Nya Robertson leads SMU in minutes and scoring, at 20ppg.  She is a 5'7" junior guard who just transferred in from George Washington.  She has made more than 30 treys at about 32%, but is a three level scorer.  One possible weakness:  She has about a 1:2 assist to turnover ratio--although she is not a point guard.

Chantai Embry, a 6'1" senior forward who transferred from Texas Tech a year ago, scores 14 ppg.  Jessica Peterson, a 6'2" center who transferred in a year ago from Fresno State, averages 11ppg and hits at 53% from inside.

The point guard is Zanai Jones, with a 2:1 assist to turnover ratio, who is scoring 8ppg.  She is a 5'5" spitfire who just transferred in from Villanova.

Toyelle Wilson is the head coach, since 2021 after being an assistant with Michigan.  Before that she was an assistant for six year at Baylor, on Kim Mulkey's staff.

On paper, we should match up fairly well.  I don't see the kind of dominating post player that could give us a lot of trouble, nor do I see a red hot three point shooting team.  Of course, not having the cards stacked against us is no guarantee that we will play the cards right, especially on the road for the very first time to this destination.  Questions in my mind:  can Agara drive against Embry or Peterson?  Can our three point shooters shoot over their 5'5" guard?  Who will draw the defensive assignment on Robertson?

Let's hope WBB can start the new year with a win.

I had completely forgotten about this game 'til I stuck a rice pudding in the oven and thought of Hannah Jump...and eventually it came to me! I hope it's a good omen.

florida st vs Virginia Tech prior to stanford .
FSU looks really good, VT looks much quicker than us but losing 99 - 61

heal didnt get scouting report

RE: WBB: Stanford @ SMU 5:00 Thursday; preview and game thread - 81alum - 01-02-2025

An ugly start to our game, spotting SMU 10 points.  Now 7-16 at the first break.

Stanford trailing by 10 quickly. SMU starting off hot and outhustling us. Still early, but not a good start.

Did no one read the scouting report?

Was there no shootaround today?

So much for punching 'em first...

That's being polite. And keeping it family friendly forum.

Our rebounding is really really bad.
They are continually just pushing us around and taking the ball away.

Nya Roberson, a 32% three point shooter, is 4/4 from beyond the arc.  But a bigger story is that our offense just looks inept.

With apologies to Vince Lombardi:
Coach Paye:  This is a basketball
Players: Hang on Coach, you're going too fast

I’m sympathetic to not having as much talent as we are accustomed to having. That’s one thing. But no excuses for terrible defense, terrible rebounding, and getting out hustled over and over. How do we look so unprepared and unengaged. Come on coaches! Put the bench in or whatever it takes to get the starters attention.

Agree. And the key comparison for tonight, is what is our talent compared to SMU's?
I cannot believe that their underlying talent is so much better as to kick our tushies around like this.
We just did not look ready from the start.
So reminiscent of all those years with Coach Haase.  A "Haasian start" as I referred to it.

bosgana sure makes some bad frigging passes

sad, players act as if they're done

By my count, we’ve shot at least 3 airballs from three point range. At least hit the rim.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ SMU 5:00 Thursday; preview and game thread - PVTree - 01-02-2025

A bad loss to a below average team. I was hoping for more from Tess Heal but she has a hard time scoring when she drives to the basket. Besides Nunu and Bosgana, not much scoring help from others tonight.

It's going to be a mediocre season with the hope that a top-treated class coming in brings us back to prominence next year.

Ugh what a gross game. We kinda rallied there missing a game typing 3 late but honestly did we deserve to win this game? No we didn’t. Too many stretches of poor poor play. Kennedy Umeh looked to be in street clothes. Should have played Shay much sooner. We need a different starting lineup.

Also did anyone catch in the 2nd quarter. SMU fouled us and we were in the bonus. No one noticed on our staff or at the scorers table. It was determined later in the quarter but the official said no we can’t go back and give you free throws so we missed out on potentially 2 points that could have mattered late. I know not our staffs job but we have what 6 coaches on the bench and not a single one noticed we were in the bonus and thought to mention it to the officials.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ SMU 5:00 Thursday; preview and game thread - PVTree - 01-02-2025

I remember thinking that we were going to go to the line after the over the back foul on them. I was surprised at no free throws but thought that I may have missed something and not that everyone on the court missed it.

Nunu missing 2 FTs and s couple of traveling calls in her also hurt. All the turnovers when we were trailing by 7 with some 6 minutes left didn't help.

At the end, the lousy start of the game and the 13-0 run by them when we got within 5 was too much to overcome.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ SMU 5:00 Thursday; preview and game thread - petersalas - 01-02-2025

The missed free throws are inexcusable. Stanford could have had a lead late in the game. However, Stanford didn’t do themselves any favors with the missed free throws and turnovers. If this team played the entire game like they did the last 5 minutes, we’d be seeing a different outcome. They are lacking the energy, aggressiveness, and moxie and hope they can find it soon!
