Preview:

We take on Wake Forest on Thursday afternoon. Wake Forest is 7-9 overall, ranked 110 by Massey, and is last among the 18 ACC members in conference at 0-5. That said, they have been competitive. They took Louisville to overtime before losing. Their losses to Clemson and to Virginia Tech were by single digits. But they have not beaten anyone better than Davidson at #113.

So on the one hand, this looks like an opportunity to get our first road win. On the other hand, everyone will expect that and a loss would be devastating.

Wake Forest has two players in double digit points per game. They are Elise Williams at 11ppg and Malaya Cowels at 10 ppg.

Williams is a 5'9" senior guard who has played her whole career at Wake Forest and is in the 1000 career points club. About 1 in 4 shots she takes is beyond the arc, which she makes at about 32%.

Cowels might be a bigger problem for us. She is a 6'3" redshirt junior who is making 59% of her shots. I wonder if this will be the game that we see Kennedy Umeh play--given that defending Cowels is probably going to be our toughest assignment.

Tamia Jones is a 5'8" grad student guard, just transferred in after starting 47 games for SMU. She leads the team in assists and provides them with an experienced point guard. She scores about 6 ppg.

The Demon Deacons also have a home-grown redshirt senior 6'2" forward and a sophomore guard who appears to be a three point shooting specialist.

WF is coached by Megan Gibbia in her second year. WF is not a high scoring team, but it does limit is opponents to under 70 ppg, so I expect a competent defense and a half-court offense that takes its time.

Last year they won 17 games--which had the WF crowd quite happy in what seemed like a very promising turn-around for WF. They won 12 games at home and defeated 4 NCAA tournament teams. This year does not seem (so far) to be living up to last year's promise. Its team stats are fairly even with its opponents except it has a rebounding deficit--so rebounding might be something for us to watch. They make around 6 treys a game.

Overall, Wake Forest is loaded with experience and it has some height and some quickness. Given where we are, it would be perilous to underestimate Wake Forest on their home floor. But I end where I began: this is a winnable game, and I hope our team welcomes the opportunity to get back on track.

A word about travel team arrived at Wake Forest yesterday.
Would love to see Umeh play. We so need post defense so that we can better guard the perimeter. If she is healthy

I just watched the Wake Forest/ Virginia Tech game, their last game. Elise Williams--Wake Forest's star--had been injured early on, and just recently came back. So Wake Forest's earlier struggles may be due to that. She does look very good.

One comment from a coach-announcer. "Wake Forest wants the game to be slow, in the 50s and 60s."

"Wake Forest with two post players in there....you don't see that a lot in women's college basketball."

"Defense is the bread and butter of Wake. Watch them in the steals department...."

Wake led that game with less than 4 minutes left. They are much better than 0-5 would indicate.

ESPN+ wouldn't allow me to rewind to see what they were seeing that they referred to as a Three Stooges moment or something. I'm guessing nothing happened? Kind of nasty to call that while play was happenin'.

That was an impressive 19-9 first quarter, especially for Tess Heal. But we need to get the inside-out game going and not count only on players going 4/4 on long range jump shots. Agara needs to make some baskets, although her rebounding has been outstanding.

Well, the 2nd quarter is not going as well as the first. Still up 29-21 halfway through the quarter, but Wake is finally hitting its own shots after starting our 0-11. I don't think we will run away with this game the way it looked like we might. With one of Wake's 2 outstanding bigs out for the game with that eye poke (the three Stooges comment) it may also be less likely that we will see Umeh this game.

I think they may regret that. Not the right time to say it. But I understand talking spontaneously mistakes will be made.

Stanford on fire from three points. Maybe three days of practice in a new gym was worth it. Heal putting on a show.

WF looked like a 0-fer conference team in the first quarter. Much better in the second quarter.

41-29 at the half. Our offense picked up again in the 2nd quarter but our defense was not as strong. Going 8-13 from three point range was outstanding, and some of those threes were set up with really good ball movement. But I doubt we will go 8-13 in the second half. I still think we need to get Agara going more in the paint.

Meanwhile, Heal is terrific. So much fun to watch, too, and absolutely fearless. Tess with 15 points on 6/7 shooting, both three pointers and drives to the basket.

The "three stooges" comment was in reference to a replay which showed the Stanford player (may have been MAS?) poking the Wake Forest player in the eye, much as the vaudeville gag that the Stooges did so often ended in an eye poke.

We lead in most statistical categories at the half. Rebounding is impressive. But we have 7 turnovers to Wake's three. We need to get that under control since turnovers are the classic way to lose a lead.

Here is an impressive stat: we are shooting 52% against Wake, which is known as a defensive team. I hope that can continue.

If Tess could start 6/6 from three point range in every game, then we will make the tournament ;) But while she is good, she is not THAT good, especially if the other teams take notice and set up their defense specifically to stop her. But she is a joy to watch tonight!

58-42 after three. Tess and Nunu are most of the offense. Our defense has been sound except for defense of Conley, who has been left open too often and sunk 4/7 from three point range.
