WBB: Stanford 58 Pitt 46 - 81alum - 01-29-2025

Preview:

We take on Pitt at Maples on Thursday evening at 7pm.  I cannot remember ever having played them before--I could be wrong--so this will be an entirely new experience.

Pitt is 1-7 in conference, 9-12 overall, roughly tied with Wake at the bottom.  Massey has them at 132 (and has us at 39.)  Pitt is behind its opponents, statistically, in almost all categories except for free throws and rebounding.  They play in front of a very paltry fan base, so even Maple's anemic attendance will feel like big time to them.

But they do have some talent on their team.  They are led by a 6'4" center from Senegal, Khadija Faye, who averages 17.5 ppg and 9 rpg.  She is a senior shooting 48%, and has not made a trey this year.  I expect she explains the Pitt rebounding advantage.  She also has more than 50 blocks.  In this guard-oriented conference, she certainly stands out as an anomaly.

Pitt next has two players who each average 10-11 ppg.  Mikayla Johnson, a 6'1" redshirt sophomore guard, just transferred in from Colorado, so we have a scouting report on her from last year.  She has taken more three point shots than anyone else on their team, but is making only 24% of them.

They also have a 6'3" forward who just transferred in from Clemson, and a bevy of 5'8" to 5'10 guards, although a couple of good ones have not played since November--I presume injury.

The coach is Tony Verdi, a long time former coach of U Mass.

from gostanford.com:

Stanford is 2-0 all-time against Pittsburgh, but this will be the teams’ first meeting on The Farm. Most recently, the Cardinal beat the Panthers in the Sweet 16 in Spokane on March 29, 2008, 72-53, behind double-doubles from Jayne Appel (22 pts, 13 rebs) and Kayla Pedersen (12 pts, 16 rebs). Stanford would beat Maryland two days later to advance to its first Final Four in 11 years. The first meeting came at Pitt on Dec. 5, 1986, a 59-49 Cardinal win in what was Tara VanDerveer’s 16th victory as head coach at Stanford.

Go Card. This is winnable.  I didn't realize Cardinal at 39 on Massey.

Thanks, Oldalum, for researching and finding that tidbit!

One possible advantage in this game is that Pitt plays a 6'4" center and a 6'3" forward, so I expect we may see a lot of Umeh.

Most of our losses (except for SMU and Clemson--that was an absolutely disastrous road trip) have been to teams pretty highly rated, and the win over Florida State does us a world of good.  It won't be enough unless we win some more.  Beating Pitt and then upsetting North Carolina at home would be a very good start.  There are four more games in which we will be favored, and a couple of pretty evenly matched ones after this weekend.  We can also expect a beat-down at Notre Dame.  But if we win all the games we are expected to and a couple more close ones or upsets, we might make the tournament.  What I think is obvious now is that there is no margin, meaning we cannot afford to lose a single "winnable" game.  Starting tomorrow.

Lepolo, Harriel and Peterson all in street clothes.

Coach Bird mentioned at chalk talk that Harriel is "feeling better" but out tonight. I gather she was ill. Don't know about the others.

Peterson is in a boot.

2 points in the first 5 minutes.  We're on pace to score 16 points in the game.

We scored 11 in the first Q.  So, we've moved up to a pace of 44 for the game.  Fortunately, Pitt has only scored 6.  Combined the two teams are 0-14 from beyond the arc.

Thanks CompSci.

Pitt demonstrates that accumulating a bunch of transfer players doesn't necessarily produce a good product.

it appears we're no longer a 3 pt shooting juggernaut

But we are up 5 points, and I'll take anything this season! (Both teams are a combined 0-17 from 3pt range. Is the floor tilted?)

This is terrible basketball.

If you were against introduction of the three point shot into the sport, this is a good game to watch.

The announcers are very generous in their description of the game so far.

I really like our players
I don’t like this level of play
