"Forty state high school associations in the U.S. now allow their students to sign NIL deals, according to NIL technology platform Opendorse" and shockingly, Texas is not one of them.
Also, loved this quote for the irony:
“Younger talent on social media also have stronger track records of actually convincing customers to buy products, not just familiarizing them with them, because they know how to promote in such an organic and authentic way that resonates,” White said.

Is there anything that prohibits a multi-year contract required by the school in order for the athletes to be on the team and receive the payouts, with penalties (buy-out clauses) for early withdrawal?

How about the equivalent of the pay-to-play $20M to pay the top ACADEMIC high school students to come to a school?
I'm not aware that schools pay above expenses for academic high performers?
If Stanford wanted to make a splash in the news world, that might do it. Ditto for any school wanting to make a name for itself.

Progress, or wasted effort?
I'd very much guess the latter, as I think there's too much uncertainty about this House settlement actually sticking absent some real collective bargaining and/or federal legislation. Time will tell.

The ability to reduce school payouts for excess payouts from the collectives and other 3rd parties will determine whether the House settlement will be effective. The big name schools will have to set the example.

My spouse got paid to go to grad school at Berkeley (way back in the 90's) - waived all tuition and fees and got a stipend for other expenses with no obligation to be a TA or anything.

Well, pay to play is now formally blessed by the NCAA. I'm still unsure how much my declining interest in college basketball is "NIL" versus Stanford being less good this season (though the former is certainly one cause for the latter). But I do know this is going to cause me to view the entire sport even more skeptically...

It certainly looks like several of our ex-players from Women's basketball were negotiating deals with their next team DURING THE SEASON. Especially problematic when their future team was in Stanford's league.
What could possibly go wrong?

yes, things conceivably could go wrong, but in this case, i didn't see kiki iriafen tanking at stanford. cam didn't transfer; she graduated. who are we talking about?
