WBB: Stanford 65 Louisville 74 -

Preview:
When I looked ahead at the North Carolina--Notre Dame--Louisville stretch it seemed daunting, but Louisville seemed to be the least out-of-reach opponent. After our humiliating beat-down on Thursday and the possibility that we have lost Nunu, everybody seems out-of-reach.
Louisville is 16-7. They are unranked, although they are receiving a sprinkling of votes in the coach's poll. Massey has them at 30 with offense and defense roughly equal. They just beat Cal 70-63, and previously lost to Notre Dame 89-71. Their best win was over 26 Georgia Tech. Six of their seven losses were to teams in the top 20. Their only "bad" loss was to #40 Virginia Tech.
Louisville has 4 starters who average 10-13 ppg, so they are a relatively balanced team and do not rely on a single superstar.
Their leading scorer is 5'10" freshman guard Tajiana Roberts (from San Diego.) Roberts is scoring 13 ppg. She leads the teams in made threes but shoots them at only 31%.
Their second leading scorer we have seen before. In her second year at Louisville is Cal transfer Jayda Curry. Jayda is averaging 12 ppg which she makes from all over the floor, 33% from three point range and 92% from the free throw line.
6'3" Grad student forward Olivia Cochrane gives Louisville a very effective post presence as well as 11 ppg, rebounding, and a well rounded stat line. She has played four full years, starting nearly every game--before this year. An enormous amount of experience. I guess this is her Covid year?
6'2" junior Nyla Harris gives Louisville a traditional 2 forward look. Harris scores 10 ppg.
Jaleah Williams is a 5'9" senior point guard who just transferred in from Miami. She is a poor three point shooter but does hit 6 or 7 ppg.
Coach Jeff Walz plays another 5 players at least 10 minutes each, so the rotation is deep.
If Nunu is healthy then we match up reasonably well with Louisville. Our talent level is sufficient to be competitive with this team in a way were not in several of our losses this year. I would still think the odds are stacked against us--playing at their place, but we need to see how our team reacts to its humiliation at Notre Dame. Will it redouble its effort or give up on the season?
I wonder if Kate will change the starting lineup. If Agara is out then she will have to. But maybe Umeh starts in place of Demetre? Why not?

If Agara can play and is near 100% I'd say we have a shot. If not no way.
At this stage of the game I would give the younger players as much time as possible to get them ready for next year and also increase the chances that they will actually be around next year.

Well, at least Tiffany Bird can't foul out Nunu today.
Go for the layups and draw the fouls!

Nunu out today. MAS starts.

We need good Bosgana and Deme3 today to have a chance.

I am not optimistic. Louisville is too quick. These are the teams both Demetre and Bosgana struggle against. Heal as well and probably Stevenson.

Bosgana's rebounding so far has been outstanding. But our shooting has not started well.

I just hope we see a better effort than we did against ND. It would be nice to keep the turnovers to under 15.
Hey, we've got a lead! 15-11
Good Bosgana today . . . so far.

15-13 Stanford lead after 1. Bosgana has been pulling her weight today. The Louisville defense is very close and daring us to drive on the basket, and so far we have. It is a constant struggle though and looks labored. But good enough so far.
Announcers said they hope to have both Harriel and Agara back next weekend. Also noted that our schedule from here on out is "favorable" meaning we have run the gauntlet already.
Louisville's Cohrane threw her head back to "earn" a charge against MAS

Came over here looking for info on Nunu. This was the first thing I read. Thank you.

We may have gotten the good Bosgana today, but Demetre is still mired in her slump. Still not a basket for her.

Louisville can get that midrange jumper at will. In Q1 they missed all of them, but they are starting to heat up now.

1 fg in 5 minutes, sad
we get a timeout and 2 tos next 15 seconds

How is that over and back? Do you not need to establish in the front court like any other basketball, league? Or are the announcers confused? Or the refs don’t know the rule?

9 fgs in a half 10 tos in the half

23-30 Louisville at the half. Our offense slowed to a crawl in that second quarter. The Louisville defense is suffocating.
At the beginning of the season Kate noted that "this team will go as far as the seniors Bosgana and Demetre will take it."
I do wonder what has happened to Demetre. Does she have some sort of hidden injury? In the five games coming into today, she is 2-16 from three point range. Today she is 0-2.
To have a chance today, she needs to do something extraordinary and hit a whole cluster of threes in the second half. If she scores 0, with Nunu being out, I just don't think we have a chance.

Q1 Stanford was really good driving to the rim and finishing. That mostly dried up in Q2. And conversely UL started hitting some of the midrange shots it repeatedly missed in Q1.

Well, I had a choice of either going to the Florida State game or staying home and watching this one.
I guess I should have chosen the former.
Boy, if Bosgana weren't playing well today this would really be bad.

Just great. Freshman Taj Roberts is "going off" for Louisville in the 3rd quarter with 12 of their 14 points. Meanwhile Demetre is up to 0-5.
We are a team with limited talent, and one of the key pieces is sitting on the bench with some sort of injury, and another key piece is deep in a slump.
Brooke gets a basket! Foot was on the line so a 2.
