Men's Tennis - spring 2025 -
Spiny_Norman - 02-14-2025
Despite losing their #1 player (Nishesh Basavareddy) to the pro ranks in the fall, Stanford men's tennis has had surprising success so far this season. They knocked off #8 Oklahoma in Norman to advance to the ITA Indoor Nationals. Earlier today they beat 6th ranked Columbia to advance to the
semi quarter finals. Tomorrow they face Central Florida (an upset winner over 4th ranked Ohio State).
Men's tennis' only match loss has been on the road to top ranked TCU, 7-0.
We'll see how Stanford does in a very tough ACC which includes 3 teams currently in the top 7, Wake Forest, Virginia and Duke. But this may be Paul Goldstein's best team so far even if they are not NC contenders.

And they have been winning without the service of Kyle Kang. Kyle did play in the number 1 doubles pairing today. I guess it’s safe to say that we will see him in the singles line up soon. I wonder where he will be slotted in, likely 3, perhaps 4
Samir Banerjee defeated the #1 ranked player Michael Zheng. Michael Zheng is this years single champion and last year’s runners up. Really big win for Samir.

Stanford just dominated UCF 4-0. They are moving on to the semis against the winner of TCU vs San Diego. The team is finally healthy and playing with confidence. The team has been hit with the injury bug in the past several years.

Stanford men's tennis is up to #6 in the latest rankings.
Stanford starts ACC play a week from today at #1 Wake Forest followed by a match the following Sunday at #10 NC State.

The tennis season is winding down. Stanford plays its final conference match this Saturday and it's a big one at home vs. Cal.
Stanford and Cal are on parallel paths. In the national ITA rankings, Stanford is 8th, Cal 9th. In the ACC conference standings, Cal is 3rd, Stanford 4th. They have both lost to Wake Forest and NC State in conference. Stanford lost to Virginia. Cal beat Virginia. But Stanford has the better non-conference win over top 10 Columbia.
Getting a top 8 national seed for the NCAA tournament would be extremely big (maybe even h.uuuuuge) for Stanford. Top 8 means hosting a regional. And if you win the regional, you get to host a super regional. Stanford has lost on the road at super regionals each of the last 3 years. They are looking for a breakthrough season to get past the super regional and on to the NCAA quarters.
Stanford's success this season is especially impressive when you realize that they have played the last month (including a big win over Duke this past Sunday) without Samir Banerjee who is ranked top 15 singles. I hope that he is able to come back down the stretch.
It all starts with beating Cal on Saturday. Go Card!

Can Stanford host a regional given the stadium is bring rebuilt and the new facilities lack much seating

I sure hope so. That would be a pretty lame reason to strip Stanford of hosting considering that most college tennis matches, even postseason ones, have about as many attendees as a U12 soccer game. And I say that as a h.uge fan of college tennis (despite the gimmicky no-ad scoring and watered down doubles format) who has attended hundreds of matches.

I don't see anything in the NCAA bid document that would be disqualifying for Stanford as long as they actually submit a bid.

Give it up for Stanford men's tennis! The 3rd seed Cardinal have showed true grit in the ACC tournament by outlasting 6th seed Florida State 4-3 in the quarterfinals and then 7th seed Duke today 4-2 in the semifinals. Max Basing won 3 setters to provide the clinching point in both matches.
Stanford's opponent will be 5th seed Virginia which ended Wake Forest's 34 match winning streak (and their undefeated season) in the other semifinal.
The final will start at 11 am pacific.

Whenever I've tried to watch the live action coverage of tennis (M or W), I've usually just seen a few people milling around an otherwise empty court. Maybe once or twice out of ten times have I’ve seen students actually playing. And even then, I didn't hear an announcer or any applause.

ACC Champs!
Got some good luck with UVA’s #1 being defaulted for hitting a ball in anger towards Stanford’s bench but impressive result nonetheless. Max with the clincher once again.

Congratulations to Coach Goldstein and the Stanford men's tennis team! It's been fun watching them progress this season.
Stanford could be seeded as high as 5th when the brackets are announced a week from tomorrow.

If your bingo card had women’s gymnastics and men’s tennis as the first two teams to earn an ACC championship, you are more prescient than I am.

Wow crazy to think that this is Paul Goldstein first conference championship as a coach. After Basavareddy turned pro earlier this year, I didn’t know what to expect from the team. The addition of freshman Razeghi and graduate student Von der Schuleburgh has been a major difference. Unfortunate what happened on court one since Banerjee was starting to find his rhythm. I’ll take the championship any day but it would have been interesting to see how court one and court 6 finish.
Men’s tennis is definitely not the team I expected to win ACC championship anytime soon.

Just to clarify, he won three Pac-12 regular season conference championships (2 co-championships and 1 outright) but this was his first conference tournament championship.

Our men made it through the first weekend of the NCAA tournament with two sweeps:
We beat New Mexico 4-0 on Friday, winning the doubles point and then easy straight set victories at 2, 3 and 5 - with Alex Razeghi clinching it. Henry von der Schulenburg took the day off in singles elevating Nico Godsick and Razeghi one spot and inserting Hudson Rivera in the #6 slot.
We followed that win up with another straightforward afternoon as we raced past Pepperdine 4-0 today (Saturday). We started with a couple 6-3 victories in doubles for the early lead and then with our normal lineup back in place, it was the back three courts that led the way.
On Court #4, von der Schulenburg had the easiest win, 6-0, 6-3 with Godsick clinching another straight-sets victory 7-5, 6-4 on Court #5. Razeghi dropped the first set 2-6, but then only yielded one more game in the final two sets.
Our top two players - Samir Banerjee and Kyle Kang were locked in third set battles while Max Basing was serving to stay in the second set after winning the first one 6-2 when it was called.
We'll play #13 South Carolina in the Sweet 16 after they had to battle past Florida State 4-3.
