WBB: Other teams - BostonCard - 02-16-2025

Did not expect this: UConn crushed South Carolina, ending South Carolina's 71 game home winning streak.  87-58

Azzi Fudd (I think we wanted her) had 28 points.

did not realize Sara Strong, uconn,  is Allison Feaster's daughter

RE: WBB: Other teams - PVTree - 02-17-2025

Blakes' sister just broke the record for most points scored by a freshman in a game (55). I wonder who's going to throw the Brink's Truck at her to get her to transfer away from Vandy.

Us??  but I bet Vandy will do what it takes to keep her.

She shot 53.6 percent from the field, 15-of-28. Even more impressive, she went 23-of-24 from the free throw line, including making all 3 to send the game to overtime when she was fouled with 0.9 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

the possibilities are endless ...maybe Geno hires Shea back if she brings her. Otherwise Duke if Academics really matter, though our softball situation clarified that...

Didn’t realize that Notre Dame earned the AP #1 ranking for the first time since 2019, and promptly lost to #13 NC State.  I’m still not sure why previously #1 UCLA would fall to #3 after losing to #4 USC.

Anyway, looks like Texas will be the new #1.

i believe notre dame and ucla each have one loss. texas has 2 losses - including a loss to notre dame. i wouldn't rank texas above notre dame; but then i wouldn't rank texas above ucla, either.

It gave me such joy I had to run it down. Happened at 5:35 in Q2. I think this is someone's recording (and subsequent zoom in) on Mulkey--it's not in the original broadcast (the zoom part) but, yeah, she's glaring. I hope this makes sense...

USC wins the Big 10 title outright by sweeping UCLA in the regular season. Betts struggled tonight and looked very frustrated. Cori Close in her 14th season STILL has never won a regular season conference title even with her loaded roster. I’m predicting UCLA does not make the Final 4 team despite their great record. USC has bigs that can somewhat help contain Betts and Watkins is just so stellar.

I was at the game. USC has all of the ingredients it needs to win it all. They seemed to rise up in the moment. UCLA didn't (again).

I don't want either team to win it all. However, if it comes down to these two, I prefer U$C this year because I do like one Kiki (Iriafen) over the other. I don't want Betts nor Rice to win a championship because one jumped ship before graduating and the other surprised me by going Hollywood over coming to Palo Alto as her auntie did.

I have a hard time rooting for U$C in anything and don't forget Watkins turned us down after saying Stanford was her dream school. As a matter of fact probably any team who ends up in the final four will have players who turned us down. But yeah I agree about not wanting either team to win it all. Not a big Yukon fan either and South Carolina wins it too much. So I guess ND is the lesser of the evils. Kind of agnostic about Texas.

I'm not a fan of the Texas coach's style of play and coaching.  And then there's the Director's Cup.

RE: WBB: Other teams - BostonCard - 03-02-2025

where’s your ACC pride.  Go, Irish, lol.  I think as far as other top teams go, I’m ok with South Carolina, and I like Dawn Staley.  And much as I hate the California SC, I’m still an Iriafen Stan.  She is a fellow alum, after all.

LA Times story on Kiki Iriafen.

https://www.latimes.com/sports/usc/story/2025-02-28/kiki-iriafen-usc-womens-basketball-juju-watkins

It sounds from the story that a key factor in her departure from Stanford was her desire to compete for a national championship.

Quote:Over several conversations, [Iriafen and Watkins] talked about their fit together and their goals. Iriafen even talked to Watkins’ family. The prospect of a partnership was tempting: She’d made the Final Four as a freshman at Stanford but played just a single minute in the Cardinal’s championship loss. Two years had flown by without a return trip. “I just felt like I was still missing something,” Iriafen said.

I was okay with Staley until Tara had her speak at a Behind the Bench after her team played Stanford. She went on and on and came off a bit egotistical (to me anyway).

RE: WBB: Other teams - PVTree - 03-03-2025

I stayed around for that talk. I actually liked (still like) Staley after that talk. I even waited in line to get a photo with her. I thought that she was very complementary of Tara and Stanford.

I agree.  And she made a told a somewhat embarrassing vulgar anecdote at Tara's expense.  My esteem for her descended, a bit.  But she did come out to talk to the hostile crowd, which was a generous act, and one which followed in Tara's footsteps.  I think she genuinely likes Tara, but there must have been some friction when Tara was her coach, and so a bit of that peaked through.
