not much new.  Wilner holds Muir accountable for the MBB spiral of doom but mostly blames Drell and MTL for the football troubles due to their lack of interest in sports.  He also talks to Muir's days being numbered once Levin became president and being even more numbered once AL became GM of football with shared reporting to Levin

I wonder if the recently announced hiring freeze at Stanford applies to the AD job.....

Good question. Will do some research later.

From the Stanford announcement:
Quote:To better prepare us to meet these challenges, we are implementing a freeze on staff hiring in the university. Critically needed positions may be approved by the cognizant dean, vice president, or vice provost, though these situations should be limited. Similarly, hiring may continue for positions that are fully funded through externally-sponsored research awards; please confirm these hires with the cognizant dean’s office. The freeze does not apply to faculty positions, contingent employees (temporary and casual), or student workers.
The AD is an endowed position, i.e. The Jaquish & Kenninger Directorship of Athletics. The money from that endowment is guaranteed and probably can't be spent elsewhere. For those reasons, IMO the University can and will hire a new AD ASAP. How soon that will be is another story.

I can't help thinking of WSJ article I happened upon in my workplace lunchroom maybe 20 years ago. It was about how the success of the Gonzaga men's basketball team not only brought oodles of money to the school, it brought many, many more admissions applications and allowed them to raise their admission standards. Many wins all around.

stanford has to bring in 160 million more in athletics revenue to offset the lost of federal research funds.  ;  ^  )

I don't think that athletics money can cross to the other side of the house...I don't even think bookstore purchases (merch, textbooks, etc) can go toward academic operations/expenditures, can it?  Even if the AD were to become financially independent of the university, I don't know if that's enough to make up for the shortfall.

Some philanthropically inclined might be persuaded to donate to the Medical School rather than the AD. They might need to push for current gifts rather than endowed gifts to help cover the brobdingnagian whole in the short-term. The endowment may be more liquid than it was in 2008, when Stanford had to borrow, but this is potentially a bigger whole.
This crisis has pushed the priority of the AD down. It is not inconceivable that an interim director who had not yet been named could be in place for a while. The AD position may be endowed but it may not be endowed to the extent that would cover the salary of a top-notch AD.

I'm personally aware of the Rise of the 'Zags. And thank you for the link to Wilner. It may be awhile until we see the GameDay setting up again at Chuck Taylor Grove but the right people are certainly now in charge of roster-building.  One quibble re Muir's ham-handedness during Shaw's demise: Bernie had access to David Shaw's throne room. Could he not have just engaged Shaw in some candid conversations and critiques during the Crap Years? Would not have hurt.

It happened at Boston College after Flutie's success and win over Miami...in fact, it's a phenomenon known as "The Flutie Effect," described in an HBS study. It also happened at Georgetown. Undergraduate applications increased 45% from 1983 to 1986 after Patrick Ewing and the Hoyas were in the NCAA championship game three out of four years.

Or maybe it only works for Catholic colleges... ;)

Not sure on donations since I could not find any data that looked all that reliable.

on admissions, I wonder how sustainable these changes are, the current acceptance rate at Gonzaga is 76%

Boston College is 16%

And Notre Dame's and Georgetown's acceptance rates are 13%. Didn't realize BC's acceptance rate was so low.

Interesting timing with Jon Denney announcing his retirement as Head of the Office of Development, under Martin Schell.    Jon's a great guy with Stanford athletics roots as both an athlete and as an assistant AD.  I wish him luck in what comes next:
