WBB: ACC Tournament thread; Stanford 46 Clemson 63 exit - 81alum - 03-02-2025

First up:  #11 Stanford vs #14 Clemson at 3:30 Pacific; 6:30 Greensboro time.

We are lucky, in a way.  This is the last game on Wednesday, which should give us a few more hours of breathing room after our frenetic cross country travel.

Playing Clemson for the 2nd time is also a blessing, since we don't have to do a scout from scratch.  They are a very beatable team.  We lost in overtime when we played them in their home gym on January 5.

You may want to review our previous thread on that game, available here:

RE: WBB: ACC Tournament thread - 81alum - 03-02-2025

If we are so fortunate to get by Clemson on Wednesday, then we will get a rested Louisville on Thursday.

If we are so fortunate to get by Louisville on Thursday, then we will get a rested Duke on Friday.

If we were able, somehow, to beat Duke, then we would be 19-13 and in the ACC semifinals.  We would have won 8 of the last 9, including knocking off Duke with the #7 NET.  If all that happened, then I think we are then in the NCAAs.

So we can dream.

But we have already lost to all three of the teams we have to beat.

Beating Clemson is quite possible, given that we took them to overtime on their home court.

Our Louisville and Duke games during the regular season were really very bad.  And we would be playing them under poor conditions, with no time to rest and scout and prepare.  A game a day.  They, on the other hand, will each have no prior games before playing us (or whoever reaches them.)

Realistically, we can hope for another win, but anything more than that will fall into the category of minor miracles.

However, perhaps our strong finish, especially if we win another game, gets us an opportunity in one of the minor tournaments.  With such a young team, it would be good to have more experience rather than less.  It also might give Agara a chance to come back this season.

Does anyone know anything about the NIT and the other minor tournament?  If we beat Clemson and got three wins out of one of those tournaments, we could at least make it to a 20 win season.

The revenge tour starts now! Why wait until next season? You drew it up nicely and nothing is impossible! If anyone can do it, it’s going to be Stanford!

Having kept track of this team and how the season has unfolded, it's not a surprise, but once you stop to think about it, it's a little bit surreal to associate what you just said with the Stanford women's basketball team.

For as long as I've been a fan, it was a matter of how high of a seeding we will get and how the committee has underestimated us by not granting us a #1 seed. It was always assumed we would be in.

We would have to go back to the early years of Tara's tenure for a time when the program was shut out of the NCAA tournament.

I do not like this feeling and hope it's a one year aberration that will not happen again for a long time. With Ogden's improved play and the emergence of Agara coupled with the arrival of Swain, Somfai and Eschmeyer next year, I hope we can get back to having a NCAA tournament appearance be automatic every March.

I previously linked to the WBIT (NCAA) and the WNIT (commercial) entries in Wikipedia.

The NCAA's site on the WBIT is https://www.ncaa.com/championships/basketball-women/wbit
The top 4 seeds are the first 4 out of the NCAA tournament.  Then any conference (co-)champion that didn't make the NCAAs is invited (ie, they won the regular season but didn't win their tourney).  I see no guidance on the selection of the remainder of the 32 teams.
The 8-person committee members can be found here.  I see no obvious ties to Stanford or the former PAC-12.
In the 2024 bracket (with pre-WBIT-tourney records) were Washington (16-14), Washington State (18-14),  Cal (18-14), Santa Clara (24-8), Virginia (15-15).  All of those hosted the first round.  Washington State lost in the semi-finals.  Illinois was 14-15 going into the tournament but won the whole thing.

That year (last year),
As a reminder, this year, Virginia and Stanford had matching conference records, but UVa beat Stanford at UVa. so UVa is seeded 10th and Stanford 11th.  Stanford is rated #38 by Massey (up 1 after today's win); Cal #33; Virginia #68; Clemson #70; Louisville #26; Duke #14; Georgia Tech #34 (down 2 after today's loss)

What is it about Indianapolis that it gets so many national championship venues?  The NCAA would likely hold surfing championships there.   It again hosts the WBIT (last year's champion was 120 miles from home)

Assuming Stanford doesn't win the ACC tourney, it will have at least a 16-14 record (add to that any wins in the ACC tourney).  I believe that if Stanford doesn't get blown out by Clemson, Stanford would be a likely choice for the WBIT.  Maybe even if they are blown out.

Looking at paths to 20 wins:

If Stanford beats Clemson and Louisville but loses to Duke, my impression is that our ranking may be good enough to get a NCAA invitation.  Winning two games in the NCAA tourney when you are a lower seed would be tough.  If Stanford isn't invited to the NCAA tourney, then it would be a shoe-in for the WBIT, where it would stand a good chance to win at least 2 games, likely at home.

If Stanford beats Clemson but loses to Louisville and goes to the WBIT, winning 3 games in the WBIT would mean they get to the semi-finals.  They maybe would face two teams as good as Louisville on that path.

If Stanford loses to Clemson and is invited to the WBIT, winning 4 games to get to the finals will be a long stretch.

If Stanford wins the first 3 games in the ACC tourney (beats Duke), then it may get a good enough seeding in the NCAA tourney to win at least one game.

Last year the WNIT had 48 teams, including 3 Big Ten teams (no ACC, no PAC-12, no SEC).  So, mostly schools that were bigger fish in smaller ponds (half the teams had 20-win seasons).
The tourney finals were played in Illinois, and home-town Saint Louis won.

RE: WBB: ACC Tournament thread - skip75 - 03-03-2025

Here is the latest (Monday morning) bracketology from ESPN's Charlie Creme:
https://www.espn.com/espn/feature/story/_/id/30423107/ncaa-women-bracketology-2025-women-college-basketball-projections

He projects Stanford as one of the "next 4 out" (more precisely, the 6th team out), so I think the analysis by 81 & MT looks pretty accurate.  That is, the NCAA tourney seems pretty unlikely for Stanford without at least 3 ACC tourney wins (obviously this is also dependent on how other bubble teams perform in their conference tournaments & if any dark horse teams win their tournament to claim an automatic bid) & a WBIT bid seems pretty likely.  The WBIT (like the men's NIT) uses campus sites for the first 3 rounds, based on seeding.  So the good news with that tournament is a chance for more games at Maples, as well as a more realistic shot at a deeper run & potential valuable experience for a young team.

According to Creme's NCAA tourney bracketology projections:
-the last 4 byes are Oregon, Indiana, Nebraska, & Iowa State;
-the last 4 in are Washington, Minnesota, Princeton, & Harvard;
-the first 4 out are Virginia Tech, Arizona, Marquette, & Saint Joseph's;
-the next 4 out are George Mason, Stanford, Murray State, & Seton Hall.

So there is your guide for who to root against this week.

RE: WBB: ACC Tournament thread - M T - 03-05-2025

Note that today's game is on ACCN not ACCNx.  At least for me, on Sling, that means I can record it (but, of course, Sling will remove the end of the game, no matter how long or short the game is).

RE: WBB: ACC Tournament thread - crackpot - 03-05-2025

Tiffany Bird alert.

Drive. Drive. Drive.

RE: WBB: ACC Tournament thread - 81alum - 03-05-2025

Agara is not starting but will come in off the bench.

LET'S GO CARD!

RE: WBB: ACC Tournament thread - BobK - 03-05-2025

I yelled 3 seconds in the key and the ref called it. A good sign

Well, I think we can agree that we would be doing better if BobK refereed all our games ;)

Thanks Bob.  Good call.  Keep it up!

RE: WBB: ACC Tournament thread - mbdude - 03-05-2025

missing a lot of shots at the rim

only 3 fgs in the quarter

RE: WBB: ACC Tournament thread - martyup - 03-05-2025

Boy, I sure hope Nunu brings some spark to our offense.  We are stalled.

RE: WBB: ACC Tournament thread - 81alum - 03-05-2025

10-11 after the first quarter.  Nunu checks in.

So many layups that were a bit awkward and rolled out.   We need to make a few jump shots, preferably treys, to loosen it up around the basket.

Defending Loyal McQueen was a problem last time and she has victimized us twice on drives in the first quarter this time, with no one getting in front of her.  Hope we adjust to her and finally slow her down.

RE: WBB: ACC Tournament thread - PVTree - 03-05-2025

Gotta make our layups and stop McQueen. We haven't tried many 3s yet, but need to be effective when we do.

Hear, hear! :)

RE: WBB: ACC Tournament thread - 81alum - 03-05-2025

Our half court offense looks labored and slower than it has in the last few games.  Does Clemson just have a better defense, or do we just lack the usual energy?

Clemson is playing a close defense and is being allowed a lot of contact in doing so.  This slows down cuts.  Players without the ball cannot run through the key without getting checked and bounced a couple of times.  Throws off the flow, and it shows.

We need to adjust.

RE: WBB: ACC Tournament thread - mbdude - 03-05-2025

over 8 minutes without a fg!
