MBB: Possible NIT Seeding at level #5 - ADPinWDC - 03-07-2025

DRatings has Stanford and USC, St. Joe's and NORW around the "next four unseeded" below the top 4 seeds in NIT.
https://www.dratings.com/predictor/bracketology/
Losing at NDAM hurt; stuck on 19Ws.  Finishing at LOUV doesn't help.
We need a first round #7 (STAN) vs #10 (FLST?) win in the ACC Tourney to get to 20 wins.

ESPN BPI has us #89 in the country
https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/bpi

Getting to ANY post-season at this juncture is an improvement.
Long drought, since 2018 for NIT... 2014 for NCAAs.
Won the NIT in 2015 (as a #2 seed) and in 2012 (as a #3 seed).

Wow. Thanks for the memories.

I'll take any postseason run.  That gives the team extra practices and experience, much as bowl games do for football teams, no?

If they can handle the travel, that is where I am.   Guys like Young, Sellers, and Cammann can "log more hours"

Agree. Even if NIT instead of the Dance, I think doing well in it would help visibility and recruiting.

And some amount of postseason revenue, I would think...

Stanford now down to "Level 7" in today's DRatings update.
https://www.dratings.com/predictor/bracketology/
Wake Forest & SMU projected as #1 seeds and Pitt at "level 5", next 4 unseeded.
Stanford needs to end the 2-game mini-streak with a 1st round ACC tourney win.

I think my three favorite schools -- Stanford, Princeton and Santa Clara -- may all end up in the NIT.

They still play the NIT?

I said this elsewhere in reference to the women's team, but the program must absolutely participate in games and tournaments to fly the flag (recruitment, advancing the brand, exposure to alumni), to give the team more chances to compete (make it fun for the athletes, recruit the team back each year), and also to gain more experience (more practices, more games).  I assume there's also some revenue that comes with postseason tournament participation as well.

I responded to that thought in the women's thread, but I think "absolutely" is a bit strong, more so for the women than the men. For the women, the flag says this was a train wreck of a season after 36 trips to the only tournament that matters. Or at least, that needs to be the mind set. Tougher call for the men. I'm sure they are NIT bound against some decent competition and the message is 'hey we might be good in the not distant future.' Again, that is debatable because teams simply don't stay together so the future is always now, now. Also remember that postseason revenue can be negative when Not In Tournament and my understanding is that Stanford is in the poor house suddenly, so maybe that's more of a deal than before?

Post season revenue is primarily based on how well the conference does through to the Final Four. Sucks for Stanford that the ACC isn't what it once was in that regard. Or that Stanford took such a conference revenue share haircut while begging in.

RE: MBB: Possible NIT Seeding at level #5 - skip75 - 03-14-2025

FWIW, in yesterday's post-game presser Maxime, Oziyah, & Coach Smith all seemed pretty positive about continuing to play.

In today's DRatings update, Stanford is down to essentially a 7-seed in the NIT projection.  If teams were actually seeded exactly as in this projection, a possible 1st round match up would be Stanford at USF (projected as a 2-seed).  After all the travel, it would be nice to be able to play locally, if not at home.  UC Irvine (2-seed) and Santa Clara (7-seed) are other California teams included in this projection.

given our travel savvy I'm guessing Santa Clara at USF and we get a trip to Irvine

Could be. The NIT has a propensity to maximize attendance AND avoid teams that have played in the regular season. USF and Santa Clara have played twice already and split, SCU crunched them by 23 and lost an OT squeaker 97-94. But of the four, SCU has the smallest seating capacity. Maples has the most (7,233) and UC-Irvine is next at 5,608. SCU and Stanford have already played each other, so I wouldn't be surprised to see USF at Stanford and Santa Clara at UCI.

I will admit I don't follow the NIT, so a dumb question, do they allow lower seeded teams host?

The first round games are during finals week for Stanford which may (or may not) impact student attendance at a home game (if there was one).

-------------------

answering some of my questions:

- in the 32 team field it looks like there are 16 "exempt" teams that will host first round games

Exempt teams will include the top two teams not selected to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship from both the ACC and SEC. In addition, the top team not selected to the NCAA championship from the top 12 conferences (based on the Ken Pomeroy Rating) will receive an exempt bid to the NIT

+ each of those 16 teams hosts a first round game

so we would appear to be hoping for 1 of the other 16 spots but there could be some more automatic qualifiers

+ In addition to the exempt teams, regular-season conference champions that are not otherwise selected to the NCAA championship can earn an automatic bid to the NIT as long as that regular-season champion has an average of 125 or better across the BPI, KPI, NET, KenPom, SOR, Torvik and WAB rankings.

+ The rest of the 32-team field will be selected as at-large teams by the NIT Committee

Quote:The National Invitation Tournament Board of Managers has announced new qualification procedures for the 2025 NIT, which include bids going to 16 “exempt” teams, as well as others that may qualify automatically as regular-season conference champions.

Exempt teams will include the top two teams not selected to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship from both the Atlantic Coast Conference and Southeastern Conference. In addition, the top team not selected to the NCAA championship from the top 12 conferences (based on the Ken Pomeroy Rating) will receive an exempt bid to the NIT. The top teams from each conference will be determined based on the average of the teams’ ESPN Basketball Power Index (BPI), Kevin Pauga Index (KPI), NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET), Ken Pomeroy Rating (KenPom), Strength of Record (SOR), Torvik ranking and Wins Above Bubble (WAB) ranking. All rankings are already included in the “Team Sheets” used by the NIT Committee during the selection process.

All teams receiving an exempt bid are guaranteed the opportunity to host a first-round game.

In addition to the exempt teams, regular-season conference champions that are not otherwise selected to the NCAA championship can earn an automatic bid to the NIT as long as that regular-season champion has an average of 125 or better across the BPI, KPI, NET, KenPom, SOR, Torvik and WAB rankings. The rest of the 32-team field will be selected as at-large teams by the NIT Committee.

RE: MBB: Possible NIT Seeding at level #5 - 82lsju - 03-14-2025

so what about MBB maybe going to the inaugural 16 team CBC (College Basketball Crown) tournament in Las Vegas?

https://collegebasketballcrown.com/

they will have two automatic qualifiers from the Big 10, Big East, and Big 12 and 10 at-large teams.

If they do take the top two non-NCAA teams from those conferences then the NIT would get at best the 3rd best team from each that does not go to the NCAA tournament.  Since the ACC and SEC get two automatic bids to the NIT then this tournament would get at best the 3rd best team from those two that don't go to the NCAAs
