There are two intercollegiate boxing associations for amateurs, the USIBA (United States Intercollegiate Boxing Association) and the NCBA (National Collegiate Boxing Association). Stanford competes in the NCBA / West division along with Cal, UCLA, USC, SJSU, SCU, USF, Air Force, USF, UNLV, Davis, Washington, Oregon State, Boise State, Utah, Sac State, Arizona State and Nevada-Reno.

Not even sure how many years it takes. I was in junior high in Madison, WI when a college boxer (Charlie Mohr, maybe?) died after being clocked in a match. I think UW dropped the sport soon after. It was a very big deal in the local news for quite a while, if I remember correctly.

It isn't good. The NCAA dropped boxing in 1960 as a varsity sport (superb pro Ray Lunny was Stanford's boxing coach). My wife's grandfather was 9-0 as a heavyweight boxer and gave it up despite his success because he said he could feel what it was doing to his mind (he became a sheriff in Palo Alto, bought a little house on Princeton Avenue, back when municipal employees could do such things).
