Down to the wire .... NC Streak - Leftcoast - 04-13-2025
We're in mid-April and Stanford Athletics is approaching the end of it's 2004-2005 season without a National Championship in it's pocket. How do folks feel about our chances to add a 49th year to the streak? Looks like the Cardinal is in contention in several sports, ranked 1st in WGolf, but not an overwhelming favorite in any sport.
Men's Gymnastics - Ranked 3rd
Women's Water Polo - Ranked 2nd
Women's Golf - Ranked 1st
Women's Rowing - Ranked ??? (1st in Reg 5)
What do you folks think our chances are to extend the streak? Any other Cardinal team likely to emerge as a championship threat?

I don't think it will be MVB (11-12)...and yet...they just beat #3 ranked USC two straight matches in Southern California. USC was undefeated at home in league play. Stanford plays last year's champion, Grand Canyon, at Maples this Thursday and Friday. Both teams are 4-6 in league play. If Stanford wins both, they'll join the great middle of teams with .500 records. They've got a puncher's chance, but not much beyond that.

I think women's golf is probably the most likely of the teams you mentioned, but the match play format adds in randomness that makes it harder to predict. If it was the old stroke play format, we'd be by far and away the favorite. I think WWP is close behind. We've beaten both LA schools handily, including UCLA twice, but USC beat us in a close one the last time around. Will be important for us to get the #1 seed so that the LA schools have to face each other before potentially playing us. Men's gymnastics would be the big favorite if everyone was healthy, but we're not. NCAAs are this week though so we'll know soon if we're going to need WWP or golf to come through.
I don't see MVB winning a title. They may not even make the postseason. They have shown flashes of solid play, but don't see them consistent enough to win a title. Will defer the rowing analysis to someone who knows more.

I remember being at the Stanford Coaches event in LA the night of the 2013 tennis finals. Watched a live stream of the final match on the phone of an AD staffer. Bernard Muir (1st year AD) started the evening saying that Stanford had won 103 NCAA championships. And he concluded the evening by announcing that Stanford now had won 104 NCAA championships.
In addition to men's gymnastics, WGolf and WWP, keep an eye on the women's rowing team. #2 Stanford or #1 Texas are likely to win it all. They appear to be well above the field.

Artistic Swimming won a team national championship. It's not an NCAA sanctioned sport, but the win at least guarantees that our streak of national championships (of any type) will endure.

No one mentioned beach volleyball. With a little bit of luck they could win an NC. I'll be disappointed if they don't at least reach the national semi-finals.
NCAA tournament was scheduled to be played in Huntington Beach. It was moved to Gulf Shores, Alabama after the Palisades fires to supposedly make more hotel space available for fire victims. That made no sense to me considering the time span between events and the distance of HB from the Palisades.
Maybe add a poll to this thread?

This brings up my next favorite question: Which Stanford sport will be the next to win its first NCAA title? Beach volleyball and softball are the two most likely, IMO. Women's gymnastics, lacrosse would be in the next tier. I would expect beach volleyball to win a title in the next 5 years given the way they are recruiting.

We will know about Men's Gymnastics. The team has yet to compete with all of their top Gymnasts. It will be interesting. OU is the favorite but I wouldn't count out Stanford yet.

I'm hopeful. But the WROW championships take place at the end of May, so hopefully the other teams will rise to the occasion as well.

In the NCAA championship qualification round today, Stanford MGym posted its highest score of the season. But they finished 2nd in their group to Michigan which probably was buoyed by the home Ann Arbor crowd.
Even so, Stanford qualified easily for tomorrow's finals which will be on ESPN2 starting at 3:30 pacific. Go Card!!

It wasn’t meant to be for the men’s gymnastics. They came up short for a 6-peat. The 2 falls in Pommel or the out of bounce on the floor was too much error to make up. They still fought until the end and Michigan needed a flawless Vault. Correct one of errors, just one and Stanford would be the champion.
Except for Pommel, Stanford improved their score from night one on every apparatus.

Just finished watching recording, and agree it was impressive and exciting. Espn does a good job covering 6 teams. Brodie Malone was the color announcer and knows everything re what's going on. I hadn't realized until today that the vault produces high scores in a team competition, and the pommel is most crucial because subject to major mistakes, etc.

#2 Stanford women's rowing defeated #1 Texas in Austin this weekend. They will meet again at NCAAs at the end of May. Stanford has to be considered a serious contender for a rowing national championship.

Looks like the best options remaining:
#1 Women’s Golf: Ranked #1, but match play is always a wildcard; they won the ACC tournament stroke play, but then lost in the semifinals in match play.
#1 Women’s Water Polo: Just won the MPSF tournament and should be ranked #1 for the NCAA tournament. Still, the top three teams (Stanford, USC, and UCLA) are all pretty close (it took Stanford overtime to beat UCLA today)
#2 Women’s rowing: Just beat #1 Texas
#3 Beach volleyball: Just won the MPSF tournament, beating #1 UCLA and #5 USC (twice) along the way. They look to be peaking at the right time.
Don’t think any other sport has a realistic chance.
