Knight donates $2 billion to Oregon - cardcrimson - 08-14-2025

For cancer research. Where was our leadership? Isn't he a GSB grad?

And over the years, how much to Oregon? One would think that a dollar donated to do cancer research at Stanford would be better well spent than a dollar donated to Oregon to do the same. Apparently that's not the case anymore. Have the mighty fallen THAT far?

this gift is to Oregon Health & Science University which since 1974 has been not part of The University of Oregon.  Given this is a follow-on to previous gifts of $600m ($100m in 2008 and a follow on $500m in 2015) they appear to like what OH&SU are doing.

I wonder if the Knight's, or a family member, or close friend have benefited from care with either Doctor Druker, or part of his team, or his previous work, and/or if they want to improve cancer treatment options in Oregon, which from the above it sounds like gift will fund cancer care along with research.

Why would one think that? There are great researchers at Stanford. There are undoubtedly some great researchers at Oregon. Oregon might have proposed a program that appeals to Knight more than anything Stanford proposed. Supporting a "new" program can be even more effective than maintaining an existing one. Even if all other things are "equal", Stanford's overhead rate (54%) is higher than Oregon's (47.5%). One can argue the "bang for the buck" is actually better there than at Stanford.

There's no universe Stanford would spin out a unit of Stanford med that a Knight-selected board would separately oversee.

I also don't think it's crazy that the guy who's lived in Portland for decades would give back to his local hospital system. He has no connections to Stanford med that I'm aware of, whereas he has donated extensively to the GSB.

Also, OHSU is one of the premiere medical research facilities in the country for a number of specialties. You can quack at the Ducks but OHSU is extremely legit and totally unrelated.

Knight's gift was key to getting Dr Druker to return to his role as inaugural President of the Knight Cancer Center.
Druker was key to the development of Gleevec, which was featured on the cover of Time magazine in 2001. Gleevec was the first medication specifically designed to target cancer cells, leaving healthy cells mostly unharmed. This marked a significant shift in cancer treatment, moving towards a more precise and targeted approach. Chronic myeloid leukemia patients previously had an average life span of less than five years. With Gleevec and subsequent similar but even more effective treatments, average life span is now not far from normal.

I'm sure the OHSU is also suffering from withdrawal of federal grant money.  I'm glad that another successful businessman is stepping up to backstop medical research for the public good when the federal government seems intent on abandoning cancer research, medical science, and the basic sciences.
