brobdingnagian fan of both men. I've never met Luck, but I played football and basketball against Rivera. Great guy, and a monster on the field/court. Perfect for Cal. My HS had a 6'9", 300 pound center in basketball, and when a shot went up in a game against Seaside HS, he and Rivera would just battle for the rebound while eight other players tried not to look like they were slowly backing away.

Thanks for the link, really shows you why Luck won so many games. He "believes" and clearly can get others to "believe". We haven't had that attitude since Harbaugh. Luck the GM is still the man Luck was when he came to Stanford and played for the Colts. I had been wondering about the post Reich years, now I am quite sure AL has a plan for that and is doing something about it. We just won't know the what that is until the end of this coming season.

Luck's determination and smarts are extraordinary. No doubt about it. As was his elite athleticism. My point is that attitude and charisma gets a team only so far--and no further. Jim Harbaugh's success was based on the horses he attracted and developed, quickly. Unless and until a steady supply of elite football athletes want to play for Stanford, the futility we've come to know will prevail. Period. At this moment, unfortunately, the prospect for a return to glory or even relevance is essentially a pipe dream. That's the way it is.

EUTM did start to reverse the tailspin before he had the horses. The 2007 roster blew donkey balls and 2008 was better but a lot of the bold faced names were still redshirting or cutting their teeth. The truth is that Harbaugh’s tenure was three years of gritty drive, one year of bully horses, and then it was Shaw’s tenure when it’s more accurate to describe us as having the horses.
What was so disappointing about Taylor’s two years was that there was no indication we were making any progress whatsoever toward being a competitive program. We had indications of progress early and often under Harbaugh. I don’t think it’s fair to compare anybody to one of the greatest coaches ever but the point is that when a program is as low as Harris and Shaw left us it’s pretty darn easy to at least directionally start moving in the right direction. It’s extremely difficult to get the velocity Harbaugh achieved, but the idea better days can be ahead is not outlandish or deserving of ridicule. You underestimate Luck’s chances of getting this moving in a better direction.

Ahh, this is making me remember the goal-line stand at USC just before halftime of the Greatest Upset Ever to keep the score at 0-9. That was the first inkling to me that Harbaugh might really be doing special with his ragtag bunch.

You are exactly right. If we are on the right path, we will see it this year, just as we did with Harbaugh.

I didn't realize, or perhaps remember, that it was USC's first loss at home for 6 years.
Pritchard to Sherman on 4th and 20. Bradford in the corner of the end zone to tie it up. And of course, a childhood friend of mine, Derek Belch, with a FG and 3 extra points including the go ahead to seal it.
We had some decent players on that 2007 squad. In addition to above, Evan Moore at WR and good defensive talent in the backfield and on the line. I think blew donkey balls is harsh.
Looking over the current roster, I'm not sure it has the same talent, but I hope I'm wrong and some of these guys go down as Stanford legends as well.

The process is underway as I write this and, like most of us, I hope for the best. I do not "underestimate" Luck to right the ship, and I do believe in miracles. I just don't believe anything miraculous can be scheduled.

Pat Fitzgerald has been cleared of the hazing allegations that took place at Northwestern. It was determined that he didn't know about them, nor condoned them taking place.
Will AL consider Fitzgerald as a potential replacement for Reich? I thought he did a good job at Northwestern.
