Three games into the season. Even if you've made the decision, you leave players and coaches twisting in the wind for the next 9-10 weeks. You're not going to hire the next guy while the season is still on. Players can make decisions to enter the portal now (I guess they could make that decision at 0-n at any time regardless of coaching continuity). I know the optics are bad around the UCLA program but this feels like a panic move.

If leadership determines a program is on the wrong track, there is no better time than now to make a change.
Players can chose to transfer at any point within 30 days of the firing date; however, they cannot play for their new program in the same season.

RE: UCLA Fires Head Football Coach - 82lsju - 09-16-2025

one item I read suggested that since UCLA and VT have played four games some players that still have a redshirt year available may sit out the rest of the season to make them more attractive in the transfer portal

Chip Kelly left UCLA for an Offensive Coordinator spot (OK, at OHST).... I would not be surprised to see Bruins slouch back into the PacX/MtWest.

UCLA will stay in the B10 because they need the $$$ and if that was not enough it would make life unbearable when having to live in the same town as u$c.

RE: UCLA Fires Head Football Coach - fullmetal - 09-17-2025

How long is their Big10 contract?  And they're getting a full share, aren't they?

RE: UCLA Fires Head Football Coach - dabigv13 - 09-17-2025

There is no way UCLA is leaving the B10. They need the money, and there isn't a real Pac to go back to anyway.

I don't think there's anyway they get kicked out either, but it is plausible the B10 could leave them- if there is another round of realignment, it could be that the biggest football schools from B10 and SEC form their own league, and UCLA gets left behind. Whatever happens, I'm glad the program is in the dumps, they deserve it.

Every conference needs a doormat.  The B1G has UCLA and the ACC has us.

In many sports in the ACC we are not going to be doormats.  While I believe football has the biggest mountain to climb, basketball may well prove to be quite competitiive this year.  We are indeed short changed on our share of the proceeds, but onward and upward. I think Kyle Smith can fix the basketball problem, but how to run around Football is a another issue.

RE: UCLA Fires Head Football Coach - Treebound - 09-19-2025

Agreed that Kyle will get there faster with our hoops team - great hire!

As for UCLA, aren't they required to give some of their Big10 proceeds to Cal to subsidize Cal's lower cut from the ACC?  I seem to remember that being in the final negotiations to jump ship.   Now if we can just have the toejams implode, that would be some sweet karma.  Oh what might have been had we/they only agreed to let Texas and Oklahoma into the Pac12....sad, but that's what happens when greed (sc greed) rules the day.

I think Coach Smith has arguably fixed our basketball program already. Depending on your definition of "fix".
If it means fielding a competitive team, having a winning season, having a winning conference record, making a prestigious postseason tournament, and winning a round there, then he checked all those boxes last year, going 21-14 regular season, 11-9 in ACC, invited to NIT, beating CSUN there before losing to Kent State.
If fixing means being a top team in your conference and being invited to the Big Dance (not the Little one), then hopefully he can check those boxes this year, though of course it is an imposing proposition.

More on the status of UCLA Football Program.  The major take away is the lack of $$$ and support from the administration in the past has led to the current state of affairs.
