2025 Stanford at SMU Predictions Thread - george - 10-07-2025

If memory serves, we have a major (some might even say h.uge) problem playing schools in Texas at their place.  Maybe this is the team that breaks the curse?

sigh! Nope, I’m afraid it will be ugly. I looking for  SMU 35 Stanford 14 and I’m afraid I’m being overly optimistic.  SMU hasn’t played up to its talent . Maybe there is some discord and they will be like FSU last year. But I fear, and believe, they will set the ship, right this Saturday.

I would love to be wrong.

SMU wins on paper for sure.  The timezone difference doesn't help.  But they play the game for a reason.

On the road, 18 point underdog.  SMU can run, like to throw.  QB Jennings is elusive.
Could be a problem.  Six Mustang receivers have more than 100 yards.

Gulbranson found his receivers against SJST, and a career best outing.  Bully.

BIG PROBLEM:  We don't run the ball well, and need that to beat SMU.
So, they can blitz Gulbranson, trigger hurries, fumbles.   How do we unleash Micah Ford?

If SMU gets two turnovers, this could get out of hand early.
Maybe 38 to 13.  SMU was up on Cuse 31 - 3 going into Q4 last week, and Cuse got two late scores.

We don't have star LB Rose for the first half (targeting).  I don't like that for openers.

I hope our guys were able to use the bye week to recover and prepare for this upcoming onslaught.
I'm afraid it may not be enough.
Similar to Police chief Brody saying "We're gonna need a bigger boat",
I think we say "We're gonna need a running game".
And just not confident it will happen, the excellence of Micah Ford notwithstanding.
38-10 in favor of the Heart of Texas over our Broken Hearted Trees.
As always, I hope I'm wrong, and if I had a dollar for every accurate prediction, I'd still be $5 short of a latte at Starbucks.

31-30, Stanford. 50 million reasons going in our favor. Perhaps we'll be creative and funnel some of that to SMU's star players to pull their punches, so to speak. . . .

Game Preview, Predictions -- not much local confidence this year about "inconsistent Mustangs":
"SMR has not covered the spread in any game this year, 0-5"
SMU Mustangs face Stanford Cardinal | SMU Football gambling picks.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPT5w3Pi4wI
Oddsmakers have this at 35 to 17.  18.5 point spread.  SMU at -1200 odds to win (Must bet $1200 to win a measly $100).
Dallas Mustangers are worried about their team, and do not respect Cardinal in the least.  "This is our Get Healthy game."

FWIW... "SMU is 0-2 this season on 11am kickoffs."  On CW Network early (not even ACCN).
Last season, SMU only lost to BYU in season, 9-0 in ACC to then lose to CLEM in ACC Champ game.  Then Playoffs (!)
In the CFP, SMU got hammered in the first round by PNST 38-10, and it was not that close.

"Total Defense for Stanford is #119 in USA."  SMU sees lots of opportunity against our Secondary.  And they have booked 1420y PASS, 640y RUSH.
Mustangs are looking to chew up Cardinal this weekend, and then face a difficult remaining ACC schedule, including MIAM and LOUV.
KJennings has 115 for 161 with 1411 yards.  71% completion.  13 TDs, 6 INTs.  9 sacks.  QBR of 164.2

Gulbranson has 94 for 156 with 1167 yards.  60% completion.  5 TDs, 3 INTs.  14 sacks  QBR of 130
We need Turnovers to pull the upset.

Fair enough, though Gulbranson's QBR is 35.7, which places him #117 in the NCAA.

To be really fair though, we have to compare Gulbranson's QBR to Jennings' QBR which is 61.6, placing Jennings at #64.  The ratings above appear to be RTG where Gulbranson comes in a #93 and Jennings at #22.  We're well below in either rating but we need to compare oranges to oranges.  (Some other worse tasing fruits come to mind for the comparisons but I'll leave that to others.)

Cheers,

The QBRs are provided by ESPN; their college formula

"The main difference is that ESPN's Total Quarterback Rating (QBR) is a complex, proprietary metric that evaluates a quarterback's overall contribution on a play-by-play basis, including rushing, fumbles, and situational context, while the NCAA and NFL "passer rating" are older, simpler formulas based solely on passing statistics like yards, touchdowns, interceptions, and completion percentage. A key distinction is that QBR is adjusted for opponent strength, especially in college, while the NFL uses passer rating as its official, simpler metric."
