RE: Other games - BostonCard - 12-31-2025

I regret that Christian McCaffrey was one of the first high profile players to electively sit for a Bowl Game.

But yeah, if you make it all about the playoffs, then the Bowl Games become like the NIT of college football.

Miami (?!?!?) up 23-14 on tOSU with 1:04 in 4Q

Edit 24-14 with the PAT

RE: Other games - Griffins78 - 12-31-2025

Over. Good on Miami beating #2 Ohio St. Impressive win.

for

1.  schools who aspire to be in "top tier" the CFP is sort of like March Madness, if you don't get in you don't belong, of course March Madness takes ~20% of eligible teams while the CFP takes ~10% so the CFP is "more exclusive"
2.  the next tier of Bowl games (~10 of them) are like the NIT
3.  the rest are like the CBI

RE: Other games - Mick - 01-01-2026

Bowl opt-out tracker. Surprised it was so few. Cal didn't have any, Hawaii only had one:

College Football Bowl Game Opt-Out Tracker

UConn had the most that I could see, 14 total. I wonder how many are going with Coach Mora to Colorado State? Of course, that doesn't count Notre Dame with its 114 opt-outs.

I mostly agree with your analysis. However, there is a serious "side effect" of the CFP taking the top 10% and March Madness taking the top 20%. The teams that end up in the next tier of Bowl games are very unhappy they are there and as a result quite a few players will "opt out" for various reasons. These teams (and their fans) often consider their season somewhat of a failure despite being in the top 10%. Those that do play realize this is not all that useful to their future.

The teams that make the NIT in most cases realize early on in the season they didn't have a shot at winning it all and are much more likely to be happy they have any post-season opportunity at all. While there will be some disgruntled participants, most of the players are either glad to be there or resigned to the idea this is the best they could do and try to win the NIT. Very different situations IMO.

which is why I think we end up with two super conferences with 40-60 teams and a playoff with 16 teams

RE: Other games - BostonCard - 01-01-2026

That would mean between 25% and 40% of teams make the playoffs.  Sorry, but the 16th best team out of 40 has no business being there.

I'd argue that no one in the bottom half of the NCAA basketball tournament belongs, but I don't see that scaling back to 32 teams, of course scaling back from 64 to 32 makes less sense there as they play two games in three days so they would have lost revenue the first weekend, getting rid of the "first four" would seem like a good idea to me....

the pro leagues seem to think the more the merrier.....

NFL 14 of 32 make the playoffs (and look at the NFC south this year, the best team could finish at 9-8 or they could have a  three way tie at 8-9, do they belong in the playoffs?)
NBA 20 (if you count the play-in round, otherwise 16) of 30 make the playoffs
MLB 12 of 30 make the playoffs
NHL 16 of 32 make the playoffs

given the direction of college football and basketball they might be going in the same direction.....

RE: Other games - ADPinWDC - 01-01-2026

Is the goal of the Playoffs "merit",
or -- whether NFL or NCAA -- more eyeballs (more cities), more money?

More opportunities for some Cinderella -- George Mason in 2004, or some double digit seed to the Final Four. ?
ESPN wants money -- so is that a Battle of perennial Titans in the finale, or some Underdog streaming through the Tourney with some buzzer beater upsets?
One Shining Moment, or Shovelfuls of cash?

RE: Other games - BostonCard - 01-01-2026

So far, most of the playoff games have been snoozefests.  Oregon blanked Texas Tech today 23-0, Indiana trounced Alabama 38-3.  Out of the first seven games, only one, Miami’s 10-3 win over Texas A&M, has been within 1 score (though Miami’s win last night over Ohio State was cemented with a touchdown with less than a minute to go).  Still, the games have not been good.

for TV it is money (and for the colleges too) which is why I think the playoffs will expand.  And while Cinderellas in March Madness are a nice story I'm not convinced they actually materially increase TV ratings.

Broadcast ad revenue is eating the world

RE: Other games - 82lsju - 01-01-2026

in the two years of the 12 team CFP the teams with byes have lost seven of eight of their quarterfinal games....maybe a ~3 week layoff is suboptimal....how long until a 16 team CFP?

I wonder if Lame Kiffen is having any second thoughts about leaving Mississippi.....

Nah - he's got a much better chance of winning a national championship at LSU  ;-)

First good game of the playoffs and… I missed it.

Not that it is going to happen, but an 8 team playoff would be better.

Regarding Kiffin, judging by the fact that he went to an LSU women’s basketball game over watching his old team, my guess is no.

RE: Other games - LDN/SG Card - 01-02-2026

Gotta say big congrats to David Bailey - he looked awesome in the Oregon game - kinda makes me sad that we had
wasted a legit top 10 draft pick talent during the recent malaise and that he had to go elsewhere to really shine... but good luck to him and just hope he is not around when the Rams use the Falcons pick (49ers fan).

Despite being drafted as TT player I look forward to following his NFL career and expect much havoc to follow in many a backfield!

RE: Other games - BobK - 01-02-2026

Now the question is which current as of now Ole Miss assistants will coach the next Ole Miss game. Or given they are joining LSU can they stay

RE: Other games - fullmetal - 01-02-2026

LSU is allowing the current Ole Miss assts to stay with the team through the CFP before coming over with Kiffin.  Whatever they're doing is working.
