New Coach Predictions? -
Row80Critic - 11-17-2025
Sports Illustrated says a new coach will be announced at the end of the season. Any thoughts/rumors on who it will be? I asked ChatGPT, and it guessed:
Pep Hamilton (most likely, it 'thinks')
Greg Roman
Jason Garrett
David Shaw (!?!)
Kliff Kingsbury
Not sure I'd be super excited about any of those names?

Any chance Vic Fangio would consider it, now that both Luck and Skov are back?
I realize our problems are mostly on offense but I always loved Skov and Sherman's characterization of him:
Linebacker Shayne Skov dubbed him "Lord Fangio" early in the season because of his "maniacal voice" and because he's "like an evil genius."
Cornerback Richard Sherman said his first impression of Fangio when he joined the staff this year after 24 years in the NFL was that of a "stone cold killer."

I ran the search with three other AI tools. Here are their Top Five guesstimates in order from most likely to least likely:
Perplexity: Reich, Pritchard, Gruden, Garrett, Roman. Others Pep Hamilton, Gary Patterson, Kliff Kingsbury
Gemini: Pritchard, Hamilton, Garrett, Reich, Roman.
Grok: Pritchard, Spencer Danielson, Hamilton, Roman, Reich.

If that list is what ChatGPT came up with, that is a very bad indictment for ChatGPT !

If the coach is to be announced soon after the ND game, it will almost certainly be an NFL person.
Stanford really needs someone who will move the needle for the players, recruits and fans. There is no energy behind the program right now. It needs a big shot of energy. Stanford is a major turnaround project and the new coach needs to recognize that (in addition to improving the strength, speed and talent of the team).

Fangio may be someone whose skill set as a coordinator may not be thought to translate well to being a head coach. With the caveat that there are examples of long-passed over head coaching candidates who finally get their chance to shine as a head coach and do so, it is somewhat telling that he is often rumored as a potential head coach given his success as a coordinator but has never gotten the job.

Fangio Head Coach several years ago Denver Broncos. It didn’t work.
He’s 67 years old not sure how that would excite people

i like Tavita as a man, but i don't think he would make a great head coach.

And then there are people like Norm Chow. Well-respected offensive mind and QB coach. Long passed over for HC jobs. Finally got a HC job at Hawaii. Went 10-36 and was fired after 4 seasons.

Big Game looms large given our 3 wins and ND next week.
Is Reich enjoying the role and the coaching of Stanford men?
Speaking of Sherman, could he come back to work with Skov on D? Fangio as a "Stone Cold Killer" DC for a year or two?
Luck, Walters and Pritchard on the O?
We need some new announcements on the fund raising side.
Time to Beat the Weenies.

Skov is not in a coaching role, and while a great player I don’t think he’s ever had experience coaching. Same with Luck, he’s the team GM, not a coach, and does not have coaching experience.
Former players have some advantages (they know the admissions landscape, they can credibly talk to players about Stanford opportunities, they will be less likely to leave if successful), but at the end of the day, I would like to have a better, more experienced coach than one whose primary qualification is that the were a beloved former player.

I fully expect that Shayne will spend some time on the field, as does Andrew today. They both want to win and both of them are more than capable as position coaches. Not as DC or OC and that's where we need some experience. We aren't going to get, nor should we pay for, a Saban.

Can we get Troy Walters?... who is not making a lot at Bengals as WR coach.
Lot of experience coaching after 8 seasons in NFL.

Several mentions of Reich but no discussion. He’s done a pretty good job with limited talent. IMHO. As Meg Worley used to say, “Rage away.”

big jump in responsibilities and skill set from being a position coach to being a head coach....

It's all a very expensive crap shoot. I think Frank Reich already has his bags packed. Maybe he does the team dinner before getting on a plane to Charlotte or wherever his house and wife are. Troy Walters? Is that even a serious suggestion? I don't think head coaching experience is a pre-requisite (Kirby Smart, Ryan Day, Dan Lanning, many others), but if Luck is just going to flip through old Stanford yearbooks to pull a coach, I'm out.
