Interesting story. Cal has a competition for Oski and the Stanford band has a competition for the Tree. Oski's uniform is small, so the student is limited to 5'7". In the story link, it's a former 119 pound wrestler from a South Bay high school who was, to no one's surprise, inebriated. Love the last part...he went from hero to pariah quickly because every Oski ever since has to be Breathalyzed before the Big Game...heh, heh, heh.

I take umbrage with the author's characterization of the 1995 season as a "mostly lost season." A tourney bid and a drive to the round of 32 is better than all but two of the most recent 21 seasons of Stanford men's basketball. Grant Marek must have tossed the Dawkins and Haase eras into a memory hole.

Maybe he meant "mostly lost season" for the Bears. Wasn't that the season of Todd Bozeman and the Bears were forced to vacate all of their 13 victories because of his $30k payment to Jelani Gardner?

Anyone who was a Stanford fan of the era knows this was an absolutely key year in the rise of Stanford basketball towards the final four in 1998 and the start of the best decade in Stanford basketball history.
The roster featured sophomore Brevin Knight and frosh Tim Young - the core of the group that saw Stanford rise to elite level.
This was the first year of 11 straight in the tournament (though most of us more or less forget about the 11th, a one-round appearance in the first post-Montgomery year).
This was the start of a sequence that went:
1995 - second round blow out loss to UMass (with Marcus Camby, made Elite Eight)
1996 - second round squeaker loss to UMass (with Marcus Camby, made Final Four)
1997 - Sweet Sixteen loss to Utah in OT
1998 - national semifinal 1 point OT loss to Kentucky (won national championship)

That MBB run, very well summarized BTW, was one of the real highlights of my 50+ year Stanford fandom experience! Looking forward to seeing what Coach Smith et al can achieve with the program too.
