ACC Championship Game - newguy - 11-29-2025
it looks as if Virginia will play in the ACC Championship Game.
but who will they play? i'm hearing Duke? SMU has lost one conference game, but they're down ten points to Kal, so that may not last. Miami, Pitt, Duke, and Georgia Tech all have two losses.

If SMU comes back to beat Cal (go Mustangs!) it will be Virginia - SMU. If they lose, then there would be five(!) teams with a 6-2 record, so I have no idea how tiebreakers figure in. It would be ironic if Duke, the only unranked team amongst them, made it to the Championship.
Also, ironic if two of the historically weakest ACC teams in football played in the conference championship.

The ACC Champ will draw a very, very tough route at #11. TA&M, then GEOG, then OHST.
Then OREG vs OHST in one Semi (they did not play in season). Fast offense against a brutal defense.
And INDY vs GEOG in the other. Two of the best coaches in the country.
NDAM upset GEOG last year in the quarters, and edged PNST to reach the Finale
OHST crushed OREG in the quarters, then beat UTEX, and triumphed over NDAM for the cup.
SO, the TV Studios want the SEC Power: GEOG or BAMA
against the BigTEN Big Dog OHST to drive ratings. And it would.

Duke won't be in the CFP if they win (UVA beat them by 17 in mid-November). There is no automatic conference bid. The five highest ranked conference champions get auto-bids. That won't be 8-5 Duke with non-conference losses to UCONN, Tulane, and Illinois. It would be the winner of Tulane/North Texas and JMU. I think ND's skull-clubbing of Stanford guarantees that Miami is iced out. They'll get a good TV bowl against Michigan or similar.
Conferences are too big. CFP needs a complete overhaul. If you want to be NFL-lite, be NFL-lite with regional (ish) divisions and clear paths for winning. You don't have a committee picking teams for the Super Bowl.
There was one clear clubhouse leader in the ACC at 7-1 (UVA) and only because their loss to NC State was scheduled as a non-conference game because I guess they missed each other in this unwieldy 16/17 -team conference. At a minimum the ACC needs to immediately kick ND out of all sports and go back to 8-team divisions with round robin play. Winding up with Duke in the championship game is a joke. They won the 5th tiebreaker, which is the combined winning percentage of conference opponents.
SMU (6-2) beat Miami (6-2)
Miami (6-2) beat Pitt (6-2)
Pitt (6-2) beat Tech (6-2)
Tech (6-2) beat Duke (6-2)
Duke (6-2) beat no one in the top 5
So while a couple of upsets in the SEC give us Bama-UGA and Ohio State plays Indiana, both with lots of eyeballs, we get a good basketball matchup in an empty Charlotte stadium with no one watching.
Miami is clearly the best team of the five and SMU, Pitt, and Tech all had win and in opportunities they couldn't cash in, but for the ACC to have any semblance of football credibility, UVA has to win. They'll probably be slaughtered in someone else's stadium, but to be skunked while watching JMU (played one real team and lost) getting slaughtered....no good.

It’s 18 teams with Notre Dame, 17 in football. Kicking them out won’t help that.

You're right. My brain short circuited. Notre Dame is contractually obligated to join the ACC in football before any other conference. I don't know what this would cost, but press them on it. The ACC has bent over backward for these guys. In or out? If in, two 9-team divisions work nicely:

If out - need an 18th team. Plenty out there who would jump at a P4-ish spot. JMU, Tulane, Coastal, etc. Or let the teams that want out, out and start something new. Stanford, Cal, and Dallas could go back west where they belong.

What a mess! Divisions do seem like the better route (even though the conferences seem to feel the opposite), but for a round robin you'd need 8 of your 9 conference games to be in your division. It's almost like 10 teams is the ideal conference size!

Not almost like ten is the right size. Ten is the right size. :)
Put me in charge and we'll have eight, ten-team conferences vying for a real national title. That means 80 teams willing to play professional football. I think there are that many out there.

Yeah, I like 10 teams because you can have a true round robin. Twelve is also doable because you can break it up in two divisions and play round robin within your division and 3 or 4 of the teams in the opposite division and then have a real conference championship. Downside is that sometimes one division (hello Pac-12 North for like the first half-dozen years of the Pac-12) is much stronger than the other so the championship is not necessarily the two best teams. Secondly, you don't have a true round robin, so you can get screwed with the schedule.
But beyond that it gets unruly.
