Must chap Cal’s hide that their former QB is leading an undefeated Indiana team and just won the award that shall not be named.
Also, I can understand the sentiment given all the runners up we’ve had, but still, classy move…

i can't help but sense that Pavia feels some bitterness.
and i couldn't be happier that Mendoza's gain is Kal's loss.

Well, he is the first Cal grad to receive the award (a fact I picked up from reading an article about Mendoza in The Athletic).

I didn't realize he was originally committed to play at Yale before flipping to kal. If he could have played at Yale, did Stanford recruit him? If we didn't, what a miss.

Talking to my Cal friends the general sentiment is that they're happy for Mendoza who actually graduated from Cal before transferring, they know he wouldn't have even been in the H-man discussion if he had stayed, and they are more excited about their current guy JKS than they ever were about Mendoza.
Mendoza seems like a good kid. His H-man acceptance speech is sweet and humble. He even gives Cal a shoutout:

His HS senior year GPA was 5.4 (six of seven courses were AP). And his overall HS GPA was 4.86. The Director of his HS Honors Program was quoted as saying, “He didn’t want to be a dumb jock”.

Mendoza was the 250th ranked recruit in Florida his senior year. Didn't play much his junior year, so little track record. He was a two-star recruit (might have been a low three-star on one recruiting service, but I couldn't find it), not recruited by Power 5 schools and was recruited at Yale, Penn and Lehigh. Cal only recruited him when another quarterback (Justyn Martin) decommitted. He had a good arm but wasn't mobile.
Mendoza's coach Dunn was a big believer and tried hard to get a school to recruit him. Dunn had been a D1 recruiting coordinator and knew what he had on his hands. Former NFL QB Bill Musgrave was recruiting at Cal at the time and urged Mendoza to listen to both the Cal and Yale coaches because of Cal's "unique" environment, which was different from Miami. Mendoza said he knew he wanted to be at Cal after one night

Meanwhile, Justin Lamson has led the Montana State Bobcats into the FCS semifinals. He has thrown for nearly 2700 yards with 22 TDs and only 3 interceptions. Completing over 70% of his passes. Plus he has rushed for 661 yards and 12 TDs on the ground.
His Instagram says "Stanford alum" so I guess that means he did receive his degree. If you are watching FCS games this weekend, this might give you someone to root for.

I'll root for any former Stanford player, degree or not, if they publicly claim their status as a Stanford person. Notably, CMac hasn't yet finished his degree, iirc. I wish every Stanford team would strive to maintain relationships with former players such that they'll lean into their Stanford affiliation later in life.
