NIL lawsuits - 82lsju - 12-24-2025

this will be interesting to watch

Quote:Missouri linebacker Damon Wilson II is suing the University of Georgia's athletic association and its Classic City Collective, which he says is attempting to "punish" him through a "coordinated campaign" for his decision to transfer. Earlier this month, Georgia sought $390,000 in damages citing a clause in Wilson's NIL contract after his departure to another SEC program.

I think this lawsuit is important. Regardless of the merits, and in my thinking they are irrelevant, I  think  that facing a plethora of lawsuits against donors, Collective members and schools will eventually drive athletic programs out of the business of hiring football teams.. directly. I foresee a contractual arrangement with an arms length for profit set of “agents” who will provide a school with a football team. They will negotiate with players and cut deals. Eventually the will negotiate and manage media rights , operate the stadium and in general be responsible for all off field activities. They could eventually hire the coaches as welll.

This will allow the schools to wash their hands of the talent acquisition of athletes . To my surprise , fans seem agnostic about hiring players now. They just want a good team on the field to watch and cheer for.

Oh yes, the betting scandals come, and they will as players get compromised by gamblers, the schools will be insulated from the scandals.

The current system Is unstable but it will totter along until there is a forcing function for change . A Plethora of lawsuits could well be that force.  Sigh, it’s nice to see the plaintiffs bar define college sports for us but it’s better than having the government do it.

In other news, former NBA pros with “eligibility” left are going back to “school” (ie, the NCAA pro league).

I suspect NCAA is concerned that if eligibility is denied, lawsuits will follow.

Although he was selected in the NBA Draft, the player never appeared in an NBA or G League game.

Quite frankly, I have always thought that guys who declare for the pros whether they are selected, or not, in a draft but never play in a professional game should be allowed to return to college to complete their eligibility.

Thierry Darlan, ex of NBA Academy in Africa, played two seasons for the Delaware Blue Coats in the NBA G-League. Averaged 11 ppg. Somehow, some way, SCU was allowed to recruit him. He's on the active roster.

would pre-season games count?

Charlie Barker clarifies.  Basically a player signed to an NBA contract is ineligible, but those signed to developmental contracts are potentially eligible. I think this is inviting lawsuits because the G-league is no less professional than the NBA; players just don’t make as much money, so I think the NCAA is going to have trouble defending that the line is any NBA contract, however small or short term it is.

Darlan made $40,500 combined for the two seasons at the G League. Would he make more NIL money in college? He never signed an NBA contract and was never in the NBA draft, hence, he was eligible.

are collegiate golfers and tennis players still prohibited from receiving prize money that exceeds their costs in tournaments?

Golfers and tennis players who have already enrolled in college are still prohibited from receiving prize money that exceeds their costs in tournaments. The carveout exception is that tennis players who have not yet enrolled are allowed up to $10,000 in prizes, plus reimbursement for expenses to stay eligible for college play.

FWLIW, there are ongoing legal challenges from tennis players who argue that NCAA restrictions on prize money violate antitrust law.

LOL, who could have possibly predicted that the House Settlement spending limit would be even remotely enforced.

Quote:And yet, when LSU hired Lane Kiffin, “The Advocate” reported the school is “prepared to commit $25-$30 million annually for Kiffin’s roster.”

“That’s very clearly an institution saying, we don’t give a f—,” said the head of a Power 4 collective with a smaller budget.
