MBB: Stanford vs. CSUN, 5PM, ACCNX -
skip75 - 12-27-2025
Stanford finishes off the non-conference schedule today, hosting Cal State Northridge at Maples Pavilion. Stanford is favored by 17.5 and the over/under is 164.5. Implied score is 91-73.5. The Matadors are 8-5, 2-3 on the road. Best win is vs Troy, worst loss is vs. Idaho State. They have won four straight following an 85-71 loss to UC Irvine. In that game, Derin Saran (who played at Stanford last season) scored 17, and had 7 rebounds, 3 assists & a steal. CSUN was picked to finish 5th (of 11) in the pre-season Big West poll. They are 0-8 all-time vs. Stanford, including an 87-70 loss in the NIT last season. Three players on their current roster played in that game.
Likely starters are:
#2 Larry Hughes II (6'4/195 Sr G) Leads team with 18.4ppg, 3.4 3s/game, & 42.7% shooting on 3s. Transfer from Saint Louis, son of 13-year NBA veteran Larry Hughes;
#11 Mahmoud Fofana (6'6/195 Sr F) From Santa Teresa HS in San Jose, Pre-season All-Big West. 9.5ppg, 6.9rpg;
#7 Joshua O'garro (6'6/175 Sr G) Leads team with 9.7 rpg, chips in 13.8ppg;
#4 Josiah Davis (6'3/195 Sr G) Leads team with 6.1 assists/game (also 4.4 TO/game), scores 13.3ppg;
#1 Davius Loury (6'7/205 So F) After a slow start scoring-wise, has scored in double figures in each of the last four games, including averaging three 3s pergame in that stretch.
These five starters played 164 of 200 minutes in the Matadors most recent game - a 100-88 win over Sac St. They each scored between 16 & 22 points. The minutes total might have been even more if not for foul problems. Fofana fouled out and Hughes & Loury each had 4 fouls. Those three have struggled with foul problems all season - each fouling out of at least one game and Loury fouling out four times.
I know that basketball is a game of runs, but I'd really like Stanford to finish up non-conference play with a dominant game start to finish. The win over Colorado was a good sign, but they'll need to step it up even more next week when ACC games begin. I heard at one time that Donavin Young might be ready to return after Christmas. Not sure if there is any validity to that, but it would be great to see him get back into action today.

We are down 7 but great to see Young playing

It appears I picked the wrong game to catch my first MBB action of the season. I doubt they'll keep shooting at this clip for 40 minutes but we aren't doing a great job covering their shooters and we seem to be stone cold from everyone on the floor, including the free throw line...

Well, technically it’s “shooter”…the guy with 19 of their points. And, honestly, the defense on him hasn’t been horrible. He’s just been unconscious…

The challenge wasn’t even close and we’re hanging in there.

On first appearance that looked like blatant offensive goaltending, that last camera angle showed that it was only a couple of inches. If that guy could have waited another 1/4 of a second he would have had a putback.
That half we looked disjointed and rusty. I hope Kyle Smith makes life unpleasant for any flies that happen to be on the wall of the locker room

Amazing what hitting 3 shots in a row and scoring 8 points in 63 seconds can do…

Ok. & Ok. flip 5 down into 3 up in the first 1:10 of the second half!

Oh to have been a fly on the wall during halftime. Whatever Coach Smith said seems to have worked wonders. 21-6 run to open the second half (and a 10 point lead) in the first 5 minutes.

First since Landry Fields to have back-to-back 30pt games, according to the TV broadcast. Glad the good guys won!

Missed first half. 2nd half best I've seen Agarwal play this year. Rebounding, blocked shot, couple 3's, good D. Okorie and Okpara played to their strengths, two (or 3?) big 3's by Gealer, Kaman came through with 3 for 4 ft's late game. He will be fouled. 100 ft's a day coming up? And, Giltay continues to do more. Go Giltay.
PS: Great to see Young back. We await his 3 from the corner.

Okorie is up to 4th in D-1 in scoring and just a fraction of a point behind the leader.
The leader, btw, is Cameron Boozer who will be visiting Maples in a few weeks.

FYI - it's Cammann - I just noticed he and Okorie went to the same HS in New Hampshire too, did not know that - only took me, what - 13 games?.....

Brewster Academy is a very well-known "post-grad fifth year" basketball prep school. Lukas Kisunas ALSO attended Brewster, as did previous commit Elijah Crawford who was purchased by BYU at the last second (this turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as he barely played and is now at Illinois-Chicago).

Suspected, bud didn’t know for sure until I looked it up, that Cameron is Carlos Boozer’s son. Totally didn’t know he has a twin brother who is also apparently a good hoops player. (Surprise, surprise).
