Stanford WBB Next 3 games - BobK - 12-28-2025
Dec 28 Cornell. Cornell is 4-7 and have lost 4 in a row. Their best game was
a close loss to Pitt. Rachel Kaus, a 6-0 Jr Wing is averaging 12 ppg and
Emily Pape, a 6-1 Sr Forward is averaging 10 ppg. Also on the team is Ashley Childers
a Frosh Forward from Los Gatos HS.
Jan 1 At NC State. North Carolina State is 9-4 with wins over Tennessee, Ga Tech and Miami.
They also had a one point loss to USC and an OT loss to Oklahoma. Khamil Pierre, 6-2 Jr Forward is averaging
15 points and 13 rebounds, Zamareya Jones, 5-7 Soph Guard is averaging 14 points, Zoe Brooks, 6-6 Soph Post
is averaging 14 points and 6 rebiounds and Tilda Trygger, 5-10 Jr Guard is averaging 11 points and 8 rebounds.
The team is shooting at 44% but just 30% from three. They are outrebounding their opponents by 11 a game.
Jan 4 at North Carolina are 11-3 and play Cal Jan 1. Their losses are to Louisville, Texas and UCLA.
They have no ranked wins. Former Stanford player India Nivar is their leading scorer at 14 ppg plus leads in
steals and shooting at 49% and 39% from three. Three other players are averaging about 11 ppg.

We should not be being outscored by Cornell 7 minutes into the second quarter.
Hope Clardy is either sick or out for a family reason.
I am liking our press defense. Disrupting their passes and a lot of freebies for Shay and Swain. Great to see the coaches adapting new tricks we didn't see much from Tara.
I'd like to see Amborn get plenty of time in the fourth quarter. Cornell is a team where we can afford to lose a little on defense and at this point she continues to be our best three point option, especially with Clardy out.
Great hi low from Somfai to Agara. Want to see that more - Somfai at the key, rather than MAS.

Nice game, actually. Nunu got going, and I'm so glad that Ogden has taken the mid range jumper out of her pocket. She came in as a frosh with that shot, but we rarely saw it in the first two years. She was bothered by taller and more aggressive players, but looks waaaay more comfortable now. Hoping it continues as the competition stiffens.

How is 6’5” Alex Eschmeyer 5th on the team in rebounds/min (behind 6’1” Courtney Ogden, 6’2” Nunu Agara and Mary Ashley Stevenson, and 6’3” Lara Somfai)? Today she had 2 rebounds in 12 minutes. To be fair Somfai hovered them up (18 rebounds in 24 minutes), but even MAS had 4 boards in about the same amount of time. I think the reason she is not getting as many minutes as people are clamoring for despite her potential is that she doesn’t “play big” given her size. She will be much better once she bulks up and can establish position, but I think she still has a lot more work to do compared to the other freshmen.

It's great also because Somfai is a big threat to drive or shoot from there. MAS seems to look only to pass these days.

And she can step back and credibly knock down the three. She's taller than Nunu and she does grab a lot of O boards but I think our offense is so much smoother and versatile with her at the top of the key. MAS also doesn't have the reach to pass inside over defenders - she tried to hit Alex and got intercepted.
Eschmeyer doesn't hold onto the ball super well - I'd say she had double as many "almost" rebounds that slipped away as actual ones. She's really great at disrupting the offender in the paint and she's pretty good at boxing out but she has the Prechtel problem of not holding onto the ball.

I was at the Cornell game but don't have a recording to review. So I am amusing myself by looking at some of the Analytics stats at Statbroadcast for the game. This message is more about the stats than about the players' performances. I'm going to ignore the players with 5 minutes or less; so everyone I'm looking at had at least 12 minutes on the court.
One stat that was amazing to me was "DRtg: Defensive Rating is points allowed by a player per 100 possessions" for Somfai: 19.9. Next best was 72.3. Big difference. Did Somfai really disrupt the opponents offense that much? Obviously she pulled down a ton of rebounds.
Another stat that seemed somewhat surprising was that Ogden, Agara, Swain, and Ijiwoye tied in the number of steals at 3. We saw the break-aways by Ijiwoye late in Q1 that helped Stanford get an almost insurmountable lead, but only 3 steals? Is it just that she gets the loose balls that someone else knocks loose?
Another interesting aspect is that Eschmeyer (12 minutes) had a ho-hum Efficiency (Efficiency Stat as calculated by Manley's formula: PTS + REB + AST + STL + BLK - Missed Shots - TO) of 8, but was the highest in ORtg (Offensive Rating is points produced by a player per 100 possessions) at 181.5 and 3rd best in DRtg of 74.
And, Stanford was called for significantly fewer fouls than the opponent: only 6 fouls in the entire game (none in Q1 or Q4). (Cornell: 12). And only 12 TO (3 in each quarter). Very similar to the Washington game (St: 6 fouls (10 TO), UW: 16)
Cornell's Emily Pape hit a lot of 3s, scoring 18 of her 24 points on 6 of 15 3pt shots. I'm a bit disappointed Stanford let her get so many 3pt shots.

Pape is a senior. Maybe she was auditioning for a spot on Stanford's roster next season.

It's interesting how one game can really skew your perception of a player. While Pape was fantastic last night, our scout on her may have been to let her shoot due to her season averages. Including yesterday's output, Pape is averaging 11.2ppg on 33% shooting, including 31% from behind the arc. I'd be curious to watch her in another game to see how she could potentially contribute at Stanford.
