With 2-4 holes left to play, we're currently -11 for the day (next best team score for today's round is even par) and nursing a 37-stroke lead over the second-place team. Where can I place a large bet that we'll win the tournament??

And we squander our 37-stroke lead and finish only 34 ahead of the second-place team. :( We would have had a larger margin of victory had Andrea Revuelta's score counted for the team score, but she was playing as an individual while frosh Anna Song competed on the team score. Revuelta won the individual championship at -11, four ahead of second-place Paula Martin Sampedro. We placed 3 of the top 4 individuals and 5 of the top 10, the only "slacker" being Megha Ganne who finished tied for 13th out of the 80 golfers.
Not a bad start to the spring season!

Stanford's lineup for this tournament did not include Andrea Revuelta. She is the #3 ranked amateur in the world, but (I presume) she got beat during qualifying which allowed frosh Anna Song to get her first college tournament action. Song finished 5th overall. However Revuelta won the tournament. Guess she will be back in the lineup in two weeks for the Bruin Wave.
Stanford only plays 2 more tournaments as a team before ACCs - the Bruin Wave in So Cal and the Charles Schwab at Colonial in Fort Worth. Stanford has a head-to-head match vs. San Jose State and of course 5 Cardinal golfers will be in Augusta the first week in April for the Augusta National Women's Amateur. After ACCs come regionals (conveniently played at Stanford GC) followed by NCAAs (at La Costa again).
Stanford appears to be tournament-ready even now. But they don't give out trophies in February. The challenge for Coach Walker is to keep the players sharp and improving so that they peak in late May.

In the Bruin Wave played at Valencia CC in SoCal, Stanford once again overwhelmed a weak field. The Cardinal won by 20 shots over a field whose top opponents were #14 UCLA and #10 Pepperdine.
The Cardinal was led by Paula Martin Sampedro who birdied the final hole to win by a shot over her teammate Andrea Revuelta (who eagled the final hole herself). This was Martin Sampedro's first individual win this season and she becomes the 4th Stanford player to win in 2025-2026.

6. Ortengren -3
14. Song +1
Megha Ganne did not play. My guess is that she just took a break from competition to give a younger teammate (Song) some needed experience.
The team is next in action on Monday in a dual match vs. San Jose State at Los Altos G&CC.

Five player, 18 hole match play and sheer luck have been sleeping together for centuries.
It is not a question of Walker getting these Stanford women fully prepared. These women have been playing high level, international tournament golf since fifth grade.
USC, the nation's second best team, is 7.5 strokes per round inferior to Stanford. And just this past week, USC "beat" Stanford in round two of The Bruin Wave--and otherwise got humiliated..
My antagonism to 18 hole match play, to decide a national championship, goes back to the Morikawa Cal team that "lost" the NCAA championship, despite being clearly superior. AndI I have always been amused that Wu and Salinda managed to almost single-handedly win Stanford a natty, despite us not being the nation's best team that year by any other reasonable measure.
And finally, my disdain comes from experience: In my junior year, I tied the state's third best player in match play. I was a +7; he was scratch. But I only had to get through 18 holes with him, and a wind sent his second shot on the par five 18th two yards into OB. Boom, even!
He would have beat me 3 and 2 on the back, if I played pretty well.
The NCAA and The Golf Channel have made NCAA golf more telegenic by making it less of a test of excellence and more of a dice roll. I get it. I just don't take the result very seriously. I suspect Colin Morikawa struggles with it, too.

I get that match play makes for better TV because it allows that anyone in it can win it. So would Russian Roulette. But match play doesn't identify the best golf team, just as Russian Roulette doesn't reward the best marksman.

Wait, I thought we were the all time Dream Team, best ever in any college sport?!?!
This team has shown some vulnerability in match play. Within the last year, they have lost twice to Wake Forest, once to Northwestern and now to San Jose State, all in match play.
Next chance to test themselves in that format will likely be at the ACC championship.

For the 2nd consecutive tournament, Megha Ganne is not playing. Concern? Perhaps. Stanford's best lineup has Ganne in it (assuming she is healthy).
We'll know more about her status next week when the spotlight shines on the Augusta National Women's Amateur.
For now, we follow Stanford's progress at the Schwab Invitational at Colonial CC in Fort Worth. The field includes 6 other top 11 teams. Like many other women's college tournaments (but not men's college tournaments), the teams are playing 36 holes on opening day. Stanford was 1 shot back after the morning round.

Ganne played in the match play tournament vs San Jose State on March 2nd, but she lost, in the 5 spot, 6&4. No way that happens if Ganne is healthy. Whatever it is I hope she heals quickly.

The team struggled at the start of the round but pulled it together to close out another W. Oregon, led by Kiara Romero the top amateur in the world, made a strong run at the Cardinal in the final round.
This was the last tournament of the regular season for Stanford even though the NCAA championship is still 2 months away. There is a break in the schedule for the team to travel to Augusta next week for the National Women's Amateur. Then back to North Carolina 2 weeks later for ACCs.
