5-Year Eligibility Limit Proposed - newguy - 04-08-2026
according to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports (formerly of Sports Illustrated), the NCAA is considering a time limit on eligibility for college athletes. i don't know if this has been discussed elsewhere, and i have no idea how accurate this article is, but here's a link:

The 5 year rule and a proposed single transfer rule was in the POTUS Executive Order.

The 5-year eligibility rule will not solve the bigger problem of the transfer rules. A single transfer rule would help. Making them sit out a year would really help. Let them make all the NIL money they can, but keep them from jumping ship at the end of every season.

I remember Glenn Dickey writing that all MLB players should be on one-year contracts every year. I'm not a fan of the idea, but I don't see that it changes in the NCAA.

Brett Kavanaugh is ready to form tackle that proposal the minute it arrives on Capitol Hill.
The only things that might survive court challenges are a fixed eligibility clock (5 for 4) and APR (still college, right?) but good luck with the latter.
The only "solution" to what some perceive as this problem of easy free agency would be for schools to break off and form their on club league basically., leaving tons of money and donor goodwill on the table. I don't see that groundswell any time soon. Or college sports fully professionalizes, sets up fair competition rules, and schools can sponsor teams. It's already there without the fair competition rules.
