RIP Dolly Parton - cardcrimson - 08-25-2026
Dolly Parton passed today at 80. Great human being, the world is a little dimmer today without her. RIP Dolly.

One of her very impressive achievements to my perception, was writing I Will Always Love You in the '70s
An absolute gem of a song.
Of course later covered by Whitney Houston in that blockbuster recording.

Her obituary included a note that she is wrote both songs on the same day. Wow!
She always thought of herself as a songwriter first. I found it interesting that her first major crossover hit, “Here You Come Again” a song she did not write.
I had the good fortune to see her perform at the Great American Music Hall in SF many years ago. What an incredible talent - she will be missed.

Let's not forget all her philanthropy either. The ones that stick out in my mind:
$1M to Vanderbilt to support early covid vaccine research
$500 cash scholies to every 7th and 8th grader in her home county who went on to graduate from high school (dropout rate went from 35% to 6%)
A free book every month to every kid in her county under the age of 5 (her dad never learned to read)
Numerous scholies at the college level
And of course all the benefit concerts, and much much more...
My fave musical moment: she appeared on Letterman with Linda and Emmylou and they sang "After the Gold Rush" by Neil Young. Just awesome.

Imagination Library (the free book program) has expanded well beyond her home county, and even gives books internationally (US, Canada, UK, Australia, Ireland):

It has distributed 332,411,218 free books (per the website), which unfortunately is a bit short of her goal of giving out 1 billion free books. Hopefully her legacy will live on, and the charity will meet its goal soon.

She was the model for what every person should strive to be. Unbelievable her contributions to music, literacy, equality, and even healthcare.
When I was younger, we only boiled her down to her anatomy. Reinforcement about how dumb middle-school boys are.

The first time I ever became aware of Dolly Parton was when I was maybe 9 or 10, and a school field trip took us by the San Onofre nuclear plant south of San Clemente. An older kid called it the Dolly Parton Memorial. This was in the 90's when she wasn't necessarily at the forefront of popular culture, so I presume it had been dubbed as such a long time before. Perhaps SoCal kids still call it that.
She of course had an incredible sense of humor, in addition to all her other qualities.
“I was the first woman to burn my bra – it took the fire department four days to put it out.”
RIP, the world will miss her

I would recommend not saying today what Carson said then.
Dolly Parton was, uh, up front about her physique, and didn't seem to mind such comments
but times have changed.
