Anyone can win, Pac-12 edition - Viking_Guy - 03-08-2012

#8 #9 seed OSU just beat #1 seed Washington on the men's side, in a contest of "Who can make the Pac-12 look worse?"

How, do you ask?  With the score 84-83 Beavers in the final minute:
- Pac-10 Freshman of the Year Tony Wroten (you know, the one people were touting as Player of the Year) misses a jumper
- After getting his offensive rebound, is fouled and misses both FTs with 18 seconds left.
- Not to be outdone, Jared Cunningham corrals the rebound, is fouled... and promptly misses both of his free throws.
- "Oh, yeah? I'll see your two misses and raise you..." After UW gets the rebound of Cunningham's second miss, they get the ball to Wroten again, who is fouled.  And again, with the Huskies down 1 point, misses both FTs with 8 seconds left.
- This time, Cunningham gets the rebound, is fouled and hits his two FTs.  Then OSU, probably smartly, fouls rather than allow a three point shot.
- Terrence Ross makes the first, deliberately misses the second, and Cunningham grabs the board and is immediately fouled with 2 seconds left.  And, with the Beavers up only two points...  misses both FTs again.  Although the second may have been strategic, to not allow UW to set up a play.

Okay, I can't see the Pac-12 getting more than two bids in any way, shape or form.

The regular season champs actually lost to the 9 seed, not 8.

Thanks, RB.  Made the edit.

This means that we're one step closer to the Pac-12 Doomsday Tourney Scenario.  Here's how it happens: UW loses, we beat Ca.l, UCLA knocks off Zona (1-point game in the 2nd half as I write), and Colorado beats Oregon.  On Sunday, the selection committee takes a look at this mess and decides that the Pac-12's automatic bid is enough for this year's Tourney field.  It could happen.

I'm okay with that as long as it's Stanford winning the tourney :p

I was pretty surprised to wake up and see Colorado knocked off Oregon, if only by one point.

Oregon and Washington being knocked out helps California tremendously, but California is fully capable of losing to any of the teams remaining because they lost to each of them in the regular season, including Arizona at home.

To me, it's a total tossup from here.  Arizona and Cal are probably the two best teams of the four remaining, but they are also have the least depth, with Arizona suspending Josiah Turner.  Oregon State can't be ruled out, and Colorado can't either.

As for Stanford, I still think Dawkins needs to go, but given the core of the team are Frosh/Soph, the quality of the incoming class, Randle's development, and the fact he won 20+ games, he probably gets another year to prove himself.

Damn. If we beat 59ers we play Colorado, whom we've killed by 20+ points both times we played in the semis. Then it's, what, Arizona or Oregon State in the final? An eminently winnable game. What a missed opportunity to go to the tournament.
