Great interview. Thanks. Of course the present track and field mess, Floreal reported to Darrin, and why he left would be interesting questions. :)

The interview touched on Stanford's viability as a high quality football program and interesting to see that he thought they always had that potential. I heard a podcast somewhere on ESPN where Beano Cook said he thought Stanford couldn't keep this current trend up. But the best is this post on the irishenvy.com blog (spring, 2011)...
"I'm getting really sick of Stanford being a legit football school. It was only a couple years ago that they were a perennial bottom dweller like Duke.... we need them to get back to that."
That was in a string on Alex Carter and posted after his verbal commitment.

Irish Envy is one of the more entertaining sites from an anti-Stanford vituperation perspective, in that some of the posters are really vehemently opposed to the idea that Stanford might possibly stay successful in any way, shape, or form. Nothing less than a descent into Idiotface will satisfy their predictions.
They sound a little...threatened.
EDIT: Of course, from a general display of mass Irish psychosis, nothing really matches ND Nation; curiously, however, they aren't all-in on the theory that Stanford must decline. Probably because we run the ball.

Beano Cook says that in just about every ESPNU college football podcast where Stanford comes up. But he's be senile for at least a decade. The annoying thing is his podcast partner, Stanford alum Ivan Maisel, never tries to argue with Beano about this. Then again, Maisel doesn't ever debate any statement Beano makes no matter how foolish. It's like everyone puts on their kid gloves when Beano is talking.

Yeah Beano Cook's (I don't even really know who he is) comment on Stanford was a little lazy and you're right about Maisel not developing the question more. Nothing about recruting nationally, or heavily in other regions, and whether what Stanford is doing in that regard might constitute a kind of niche, or for that potential.

The fact that Beano Cook predicts our imminent demise is one of the best indicators I have heard that perhaps Stanford will maintain its recent success. Beano is a perfect inverse barometer, to poach a phrase from the movie "Little Big Man". I can't remember the last time I thought he was right about anything.

One of the greatest movies of all time! Richard Mulligan's (as Custer) words to Dustin Hoffman (as Jack Crabb..aka Little Big Man) when Hoffman tells him NOT to go down into the valley of the Little Bighorn.
My favorite (and often-used) quote (from Chief Dan George): 'Sometimes the magic works; sometimes it doesn't."
Back on point....Beano is a Domer-butt-kissing, demented old romantic. If it weren't so damned irritating, it would seem sad, in a way, since he was SID at Pitt, I think, as a younger man.

I think Beano's been a bit delusional for much more than a decade. Remember when he predicted at least two or three Heismans for Rick Mirer? Rick Mirer!

I thought that was Ron Powlus...but he may have done it for Mirer as well.

No, I think you're probably right. I think it was Powlus.

Garvin, I actually accept your defense of Beano as a very personable guy. That comes through even on the air. I wasn't taking a personal shot at him, but I actually do think he is a perfect inverse barometer in the field of sports punditry.
