Missy Franklin's College Choices - C'mon AD! -
unclechuck - 08-06-2012
In her late interview with Bob Costas last night Franklin said that she was really looking forward to the team experience of college swimming & had no intentions of turning pro.
Costas asked for her current leaders list and she said she was planning on visiting Cal, USC, Texas, and maybe one other. Cal is understandable with the bares coach the women's Olympic coach and ex-bare Dana Vollmer having been on two gold medal relays with Franklin in London. Texas and USC fall into the usual suspects category.
Franklin is the type of athlete who could be the cornerstone of multiple national championships and certainly appears to be a grounded, delightful young woman in addition to being an elite athlete. She is just starting her senior year in high school, so there is still a window of opportunity.
C'mon Bernard, get out of the gate like a champ and hire a great women's swim coach so we can get a shot at this exceptional young woman or it may be a tough 4 years of coulda, shoulda.

If she likes the the college near a BART station coach, double her salary and bring her over. Then offer her current personal coach the assistant job at 2x what he makes now. Bingo, 4 national titles. How hard is this Stanford A.D. job, really.
In all seriousness, I did not hear about any Stanford swimmers this Olympics. Perhaps I missed them, but that is the first time I recall that.. Maybe it IS time to make a splash..

Your memory is correct, Norcalcard. No Stanford swimmers on this year's Olympics team. >:(

Maybe none currently in school, but Kenya's Jason Dunford is Stanford '09.
EDIT: Or was it exclusively women swimmers being considered?

WIM - I was thinking just US team, as I expect Nanc3y was. If you watched much of the swimming it was clear that Franklin was really enjoying and flourishing in the strong team environment that the US had this year. Alas, there were no Stanford based teammates around during their pre-Olympic training camp in France or during their time in the Olympic Village to extol the virtues of the athletic/academic experience available in Palo Alto.
Worse still was the surfeit of dirty bares to spin their vile tales of some urban Shangri La NW of Palo Alto.
A swimmer like Franklin could have a Wiggins/Luck level impact on a college swim team, so I just hate to see Stanford miss out on making its best case for that to happen in Palo Alto.

Two consecutive national titles and the Olympic Head Coach - a tough combo to beat....
Kinda like Tara signing all the premier young women hoopsters....

I was also surprised when she didn't mention Stanford. I wonder if it's only because of the coaching situation, because I really think I heard somewhere before the Games that Stanford was on her short list.

Here's an article stating that while Stanford was on her list initially, she dropped the Cardinal after Maurer resigned. For what it's worth, someone in the comments section indicated that Franklin's personal coach, Todd Shmitz, has actually already interviewed for the Stanford job. Who knows how accurate that is. Anyway, here's the link:

Jeeze, nice find Hank91. Yes GA, that was the other school mentioned. This article helps explain that too.
Well, LOI's have not yet been signed...
