Quote:Chris Miltenberg has been named Stanford's Franklin P. Johnson Director of Track & Field and head cross-country coach as announced by Jaquish & Kenninger Director of Athletics Bernard Muir.
Miltenberg comes from Georgetown where he was the associate head coach for track and field and the head women's cross-country coach. He led the Hoyas to the 2011 NCAA title in women's cross country and was named the USTFCCCA National Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year.

I don't really know much of anything about Track & Field, Cross Country, or this coach in particular... but Welcome, Chris!
Uh-oh. Could this guy be a FOB (Friend of Bernard)? - Redrum - 08-27-2012
From Georgetown...where new Stanford AD Bernard Muir spent some time before going to Delaware.  Of course, when one isn't paranoid about the l
ast time a Stanford AD put
Friend Of Ted into our lexicon, this is just how it's done. Networking, I think they call it. Hope this guy knows how to recruit with the power of Stanford's facilities/ tradition and California weather as his tools.

This looks like a very promising start. Georgetown, particularly their women's teams, have been very strong in the middle and long distance/XC events over the last several years. Miltenberg appears to be the coach behind that, which is great as that is probably Stanford's strongest area now, and an area where they have had some great recruiting momentum of late.
However, we also lost multiple assistant coaches in sprint and field events to KY, and to build a balanced and competitive team we will need to continue to build in those areas as well. Hopefully the appeal of Stanford and the Pac12 will enable Miltenberg to bring on outstanding assistant coaches in short order. It will be interesting to see how it shakes out.
BTW, the recent Pac12 Channel's preview of cross country (XC) was very well done and gives a nice preview of the season. The XC conference championship @ UCLA will be the first championship broadcast on the Pac12 Channel.
If you're curious about one of those sports that quietly goes about boosting our Directors' Cup standings with top 10 national finishes see if you can catch that preview on replay or internet. These are delightful, very real, student athletes out there doing something they love.

Unclechuck, how do you feel about bringing back Robert Weir, the throwers' coach who was wooed to Oregon by Vin Lananna? He coached some great throwers during his time on the Farm and is no longer at Oregon, although I'm not sure why he left.Â

I'd lean towards BobKs take. Weir was recently replaced in Oregon when they reshuffled their coaching staff earlier this summer. All very polite but Oregon throwers have underperformed expectations the last couple of years. Unreasonable expectations, coaching, other? Hard to say.
Vin has moved into more of a CEO position with a lot of responsibilities on facilities, big events etc. The sprints coach, Robert Johnson, is now the head coach and the Weir replacement appears to be his call. I suspect Miltenberg may have some of his own folks that he'd like to bring in.

Pretty interesting thread over at Letsrun.com about the hire.

Mixed reaction, overall, with some noting that he's pretty young -- 2003 Georgetown grad -- to take on such a big job. Those seeming to approach it from G'town perspective definitely not happy he's leaving.

Interesting on let's run but as usual not very accurate.

It seems like the Georgetown fans are upset, so that's a good sign.
