News Bits via Wilner - FarmBoy - 08-27-2012

Didn't see this article linked. The main focus is on the left OT battle, but there are some other bits of interest:

http://www.mercurynews.com/stanford-cardinal/ci_21411550/stanford-football-battle-left-tackle-spot-continues?source=rss

Among the more interesting bits:
- Peat and Murphy are battling for LOT, but may not get the start until later in the season. Shaw will decide Thursday.
- Hewitt and Meinken are out - Ward and Skov are the likely replacements
- Nottingham will only see the field if Nunes is hurt
- no decision yet on redshirting BJS

And some more news bits via Kyle Bonagura (‏@KyleBonagura):

"Chase Thomas has put on 10 pounds of muscle & added flexibility after getting feedback on his NFL Draft prospects last year. #Stanford"

"Potential All-American LB Chase Thomas: "I'm tired of hitting Zach Ertz and Levine Toilolo all day long.""

"Josh Nunes is planning on graduating in June and getting his masters next year. #Stanford"

"Josh Nunes: "I got hit quite a bit when Harbaugh was still here." Harbaugh let the defense hit him as a freshman in spring drills."

"Josh Nunes now on the hotseat. Feels prepared, a few butterflies. #Stanford"

"Yesterday, Stanford @CoachDavidShaw addressed team on what Bill Walsh meant to both #SJSU and #Stanford"

"Shaw has not spoken with David DeCastro since his injury. Others at Stanford have: "Spirits are good, hoping to make it back this year."

"Wayne Lyons will rotate in early at CB for #Stanford vs #SJSU."

"Shaw: Brett Nottingham is not expected to play vs SJSU. "Only if Josh (Nunes) breaks a shoelace." (didn't want to say the I-word). #Stanford"

"Shaw: ILB Jarek Lancaster (leading tackler from last year) will play an important role on defense - also a core special teams guy. #Stanford"

"Shaw on soph James Vaughters: We can't have a guy like that on the bench. #Stanford"

"On Barry J. Sanders. To redshirt or not to redshirt? My read is Shaw wants to redshirt him. #Stanford"

"#Stanford: David Yankey also an option at LT (Khalil Wilkes would then play LG), but sounds like Shaw wants a frosh to step up at LT."

"Both true freshmen Kyle Murphy and Andrus Peat will see time at LT vs #SJSU"

Re: News Bits via Wilner - metsjetsfan - 08-28-2012

And Stanford Football @StanfordFball:

"He does a lot of the same things @ShayneSkov11 does but at 250 pounds" - on sophomore ILB @JVtheNotorious9 #dshawpc #gostanford

From David Lombardi @davidmlombardi

"The more I hear about/see James Vaughters, the more I'm thinking all-PAC 12 is gonna happen. 250 pound Skov-like freight train? Yikes"

"Plus, opponents will not be able to key on Vaughters with Skov, Thomas, Murphy et al to block. No better way to break into starting lineup"

I'm getting SUPER excited to see Vaughters...sounds like he's turning into a BEAST and well on his way to fulfilling his potential as the top recruit from 2011.  He must have improved by leaps and bounds to advance above 2011's leading tackler Lancester on the depth chart.  He may very well be simply BETTER than Lancester, who's already started 10+ games!  Once Skov comes back and hopefully returns to form, we could easily have our two ILB starters from last year coming off the bench.  WOW!!

Re: News Bits via Wilner - FarmBoy - 08-28-2012

Is it just me, or does the release of the depth start make the coming season feel more real? It was all kind of ethereal and hypothetical until suddenly--here's your starting QB, OLine, LBs, etc etc. My excitement for Friday has increased exponentially by being able to envision that starting line up on the field. I know the coaches are pumping a lot of sunshine, but I can see these players doing great things.

Re: News Bits via Wilner - Cardinal96 - 08-28-2012

I am really excited to see some of our highly touted freshmen and reshirt freshman.  In particular, Peat or Murphy at LT and Lyons and Carter at CB.  Lyons and Carter both have potential to be great cover corners.  I have been following Stanford football since the early '90s and I can't think of us ever having a stellar CB tandem since that time.

Re: News Bits via Wilner - stan01 - 08-28-2012

One more from Kyle:

"[Fans] can expect a consistent hard worker. [Nunes is] going to play mistake free," Owusu said. "Great leader. Not the most outspoken person, but he leads by example."

(08-28-2012, 09:38 AM)garvin link Wrote:Can Shaw really have meant that? We're up 45-0 in the fourth quarter and Nunes is going to stay in? If true, that seems like a bad idea in lots of different ways.

Of course he doesn't mean it literally. (At least this is my assumption.) My guess is that he's doing everything short of buying billboard space on El Camino to declare "JOSH NUNES IS THE QUARTERBACK AND DON'T YOU DARE ATTEMPT TO EVEN RAISE A HINT OF A QUARTERBACK CONTROVERSY OR ELSE I SWEAR I WILL ADDRESS YOU IN THE FLATTEST, CURTEST VOICE THIS TECHNOCRAT-COACH CAN MUSTER.
...

OR PERHAPS MURDER YOU. I HAVE NOT DECIDED YET. FURTHER STUDIES ARE WORKING THEIR WAY THROUGH THE HOOVER INSTITUTION."

Re: News Bits via Wilner - FarmBoy - 08-28-2012

I like the way the Kyle B tweet on the topic phrases the response:

Quote:Shaw: Brett Nottingham is not expected to play vs SJSU. "Only if Josh (Nunes) breaks a shoelace." (didn't want to say the I-word).

Re: News Bits via Wilner - oman - 08-28-2012

Just realized I have not heard anything about Ikenna Nwafor.  Any news on how he is progressing?

(08-28-2012, 11:36 AM)oman link Wrote:Just realized I have not heard anything about Ikenna Nwafor.  Any news on how he is progressing?

Randy Hart on Ikenna: "CSR: Position-wise though with the true freshmen, Aziz Shittu, Jordan Watkins and Nathanael Lohn are at end and Ikenna Nwafor is kind of a hybrid?

RH: (Ikenna's) either/or. We never want to put a guy at the inside nose position depending on his quickness and ability to handle the snap. It happens faster when you're inside. When you're outside at the tackle position it happens much slower. You have to be quick-footed and have the ability to bend inside, so one of those four guys or two of those four guys could move inside at some point in time but right now I would say that Ikenna Nwafor has a great opportunity because he does have a motor and an ability to move.

CSR: What have you seen from the quartet of true freshmen defensive linemen?

RH: Confusion. They work hard, they're getting to work harder. They don't understand the tempo of college football yet, but we don't expect them to. They are freshmen. I'm a guy that kind of liked that freshman orientation period where they can learn the system one time through without the shock of Cameron Fleming and David Yankey and those guys coming after them, because that tends to confuse you not only physically, but then when you don't know what to do mentally you get a little bit confused there too.

CSR: Are any of the four more college-ready than the others?

RH: I wouldn't want to answer that. After the first scrimmage, after we get in some battle situations where its down and distance and game situation, I'd rather answer that then, but right now we're kind of installing still and trying to establish the mental part of the game as well as improving the physical."

Shaw on Ikenna:
"I love the freshmen. I'm not sure if any of them are ready to play this year, but the flashes from Aziz Shittu and Ikenna Nwafor have been outstanding. Jordan Watkins is an unbelievable athlete for as big as he is. Those guys have so much to learn. We'll see if any of them get ready to play, but I'm excited where they are and we have depth hopefully going forward."
