kal men's assistant Greg Meehan named as Stanford women's swimming head coach -
fullmetal - 08-27-2012
Quote:STANFORD, Calif. - Greg Meehan has been named Stanford head women's swimming coach, as announced Monday by Jaquish and Kenninger Director of Athletics Bernard Muir.
"We are excited to welcome Greg Meehan to the Stanford family as our new women's swimming and diving head coach," Muir said. "Greg brings a wealth of experience from his previous coaching stints at Princeton, UCLA, Pacific and most recently at Cal. He has excelled at coaching student-athletes not only in academic settings but also in the highest level of the sport while producing NCAA champions and Olympians."
Looks like a solid resume, but I don't know anything about him other than what the presser says.

I have two comments:
1. What I love most about the software is when it transposes a part of a quote, like it did there. It never gets old.
2. I hope Coach Meehan has already either A) placed a call to Missy Franklin, or B) showed up outside her third period class and offered to carry her books until June.

An interesting hire and possibly a great one. During his time with the program C.al has certainly been successful. While Stanford has coninued to win conference championships, C.al has been able to consistently elevate their performance for the NCAA championships and have recruited to that as well. Meehan has seen how it works in one program first hand. We'll have to see how he translates it to Palo Alto.
I think that his time @ Colorado Springs may have had him around Mark Schubert, former Mission Viejo, Texas, U.SC, & Olympic coach and guru of distance and IM events. So that might also be a plus.
In swimming, recruiting the super-elite athlete is critical to winning national titles, maybe as much so as in basketball. Developing talent is also essential, but the difference maker who can swim on multiple relays is key. So, yes Hank91 Missy would be great, but if that train has left the station then a program can still be significantly elevated within just a few recruiting classes. It will be interesting.

Worth noting, the diving-side of things (which I think has a separate HC??) picked up a top-notch recruit, Kassidy Cook.
Quote:With the U.S. having its best Olympic diving outcome in more than a decade in London, being one of the first off the roster still means Cook is an incredible diver who will immediately step into NCAA title contention for the Cardinal as a freshman.
