Shaw obviously had no idea what he was doing picking Nunes. The kid is awful. Can't call a play, can't audible, can't throw. :>)

If only we had a defense.

Play calling allowing them to tee off on the running game. Have to mix it up and take some chances on Nunes' abilities.
Re: Nunes -

Hmm. First Shaw telegraphs the run game, and now Nunes telegraphs his throws...

I feel bad piling on Nunes after just 3 quarters of football, but this is not all that encouraging. Presumably, the ability to get the offense into the right play should result in things like a better 3rd down conversion rate.
This has always been my issue with choosing Nunes over Nottingham: lets say we win this game, but Nunes looks bad in the effort. Do you replace him? I think Shaw says: well, he's our QB and we committed to him, he'll review film and get better, yada yada yada. It is always difficult to replace a QB after a win. So we somehow win today and maybe next week, and it's not until USC that we have a disaster. What then? Put Nottingham in right before the team's first road game? Nottingham needs experience, these are the perfect games for him.Â
Re: Nunes - Cardinal96 - 08-31-2012
The jury is out on Nunes. He does look like a deer lost in headlights sometimes. That said, this is his first start and he has yet to throw an interception.
Re: Nunes -
oman - 08-31-2012
Agree, but I actually think Shaw will look at film and if he decides Nunes can't make those short passes we have to make to keep our running game going, he will give another guy a chance. If he thinks Nunes can correct it, he will get to stay in.
Re: Nunes - Cardinal96 - 08-31-2012
Some drops hurt Nunes. He threw a perfect pass to Ty Montgomery on 3rd and long and Ty let it go right through his hands.

Relatively speaking, Nunes appears to be the one part of the team that performed as expected. Not spectacular but solid.
The defense, the lines, the secondary, coaching etc., on the other hand, were all well below expectations.
Re: Nunes -

I think at this point we have to say that the defense got their act together and we really need to focus on the O-line and getting the receivers to run some quick simple routs for Nunes.

I'm more annoyed at the play calling. Found myself again (last season too) screaming at the screen "PREDICTABLE!"Â

Taylor up the middle. Taylor up the middle. Taylor up the middle. Taylor up the middle.

Isn't it normal for coaches to keep most of the playbook under wraps for the earlier games, so opponents have fewer plays on tape? Is that a factor here?

Good thing the Stanford playbook is the most complex in college football. There must be a lot of plays catching dust in there.

I think that has been mentioned, but with a new quarterback, it doesn't sound like a no-fault approach.

Probably, and most people around me commented that we're especially keeping things under wraps in advance of SC. It would be nice to see something different on first down, though.

That really scares me. The way we played today, we are closer to Duke's level than SC's level. We shouldn't be overlooking anybody.

If Shaw were keeping things vanilla in advance of SC, the man has balls of steel. No getting around it.
Personally, I'm not going to pretend it's not disturbing.

Very disturbing. How did they regress so much? I still don't understand why Yankey was moved to LT. Screws up the o-line. They should play the freshman so they grow up quicker. If Danser and Wilkes aren't getting it done then Garnett should be given a chance. Nunes wasn't terrible but he certainly wasn't impressive. Shaw needs to stop the playing not to lose mentality. SMH

Was this the basic setup for most of the game:
LTÂ 54Â Yankey,DÂ
LGÂ 65Â Wilkes,KÂ
CÂ 64Â Schwartzstein,S
RGÂ 76Â Danser,KÂ
RTÂ 73Â Fleming,CÂ
I have to admit, I was focusing on Nunez and the play calling.
