O-line play - scorecard - 09-02-2012

In the SJS game, the offensive line play was the most concerning to me, more so than Nunes' play.  Unfortunately you can't replace NFL talents like Martin and Decastro with Wilkes and Danser.  And moving Yankey to LT caused more continuity problems (which Shaw in the past has said he didn't want to do either).  In the 4th quarter this really showed if you watch the tape.  On the 4th down play that was stuffed, Wilkes trips on Schwartzstein and literally falls to his knees going into the hole allowing his man to dive over him and stop Taylor.  On another play, Danser also tripped and falls in the hole causing a no gain play, setting up a long yardage 3rd down.  We underestimate how good both Decastro and Yankey were/are at pulling, being nimble, and finding the right person to block.  The fullbacks also missed blocks at times, so Hewitt was missed as well.  On the Nunes pass/fumble that was challenged, he was hit by 3 defenders at the same time because of multiple missed blocks.  We rarely saw this in the last 3 years.  The last few years we were dominant on the O-line and could count on 3 yards a pop on most running plays, and it was rare to see so many (or any) defenders in the backfield.  Hopefully this can be cleaned up, but I think Shaw should turn to the heralded freshmen or at least Austin at LT and bring Yankey back to guard, because it will be an average season at best if the blocking remains like this.  At least with Peat or Murphy, it may be trial by fire, but we would be playing talent that has the potential to be dominant as well as grooming the future.

And we have three extra quarterbacks waiting to play in case freshman tackle mistakes lead to big hits.

Re: O-line play - StannyBoy - 09-02-2012

I still don't understand Shaw. He said you don't change what is working and then he freaks out and moves Yankey to LT last second. Austin is a soph and was highly rated. Give him or Murphy a chance while Peat is out. I want to see how Nunes does with Garnett and Yankey at guard and one of the frosh at LT. If he doesn't wow then the USC game will be a blood bath.

I completely agree with young_money, would love to see Garnett in there (if he is as good as advertised), pulling at 320 lbs and just mauling people.  This is what was awesome about running power, I loved seeing Decastro pulling and just blasting guys (sad to hear about his knee injury by the way).  This is in contrast to Oregon's o-line, where it seems the modus operandi is to just grab and hold your assignment in place, just long enough not to get a flag it seems, and just long enough to let one of their speedy backs squirt past the first level.  Like most of what is apparently going on in Eugene, it's borderline illegal but the officials haven't stepped in to stop it yet.

Didn't Garnett play quite a bit at RG?

Re: O-line play - BobK - 09-03-2012

Garnett and Murphy played outside the ROT in the jumble with Bonnell as the 2nd FB.  Certainly lots of work to be done with these 8 OL plus Peat.

Re: O-line play - scorecard - 09-03-2012

Even when Garnett and Murphy were out on the edge, I don't remember them running in their direction very often.  Garnett is a brobdingnagian guy -- excited for his potential on the interior.

By the way, did something happen to Austin that he didn't play at all?  I don't remember seeing him (but could be wrong there) and didn't remember hearing about any injury .

Re: O-line play - StannyBoy - 09-03-2012

Austin's stock tanked quicker than Zynga. Went from almost starting at LT to being moved over to RT to back up Fleming and when Peat got injured he wasn't moved back to LT.

You sure about Peat.  He played a bit on FG and XP teams.

The theory, based on an Andrus Peat tweet that Drukarev retweeted (here: https://twitter.com/AndrusPeat/status/242462721642205184), is that Peat's hand cast is keeping him off of the offensive line until it comes off.

Re: O-line play - StannyBoy - 09-03-2012

Yes Peat never lined up at LT.
