One small comment:

as the announcers mentioned in the first half, can someone please tell officials that the "Bush push" is illegal?  How much more obvious could that penalty have been to the umpire looking directly at it from about 7 yards away?

This feels better than any win over the University of Second Choice I can remember...and I've been a Stanford fan for 55 years.    Incredible, dominating performance by the front 7 and wonderful play by the back end.  And, when the game was on the line, the O line came to mash SC's bag.  Josh Nunes is a gamer and  how about Mr. Taylor?

The Spoiled Children were going to do this and that to us...instead Stanford kicked their arrogant a**es plain and simple.  Shut up and play.  The score shouldn't have been as close as it was.  And, after the pissy talk about Andrew Luck ,  putting Barkley's Voldemort in the sh***** along with their run at the NC is just too sweet for an old man to bear.  Go Indians!

What I loved was beating their dirty team selves. God they were so dirty. Typical SC. Bet they think they deserved that one too.

GG--

It's just that the Bush Push was so famous, I thought it might actually stick in the minds of the officials, especially on an instance that blatant.

There have been so many wonderful victories over the Spoiled Children.  2007 was so special for shock value and breaking out of the culture of losing, the wins each of the last two years were more thrilling, but this was more satisfying than any of those.  I would rank this one alongside the "Whats your deal" game, although this was perhaps even better because it had more ruinous consequences for SC's National Championship hopes and Draco's Voldemort hopes.  Most importantly, it elevated the post-luck Stanford in front of a national audience and in front of recruits.

The most pleasant surprise to me was that our secondary is turning out to be quite good.  The front seven seemed so much much better against SC than they did against SJSU.  It almost seems as if SJSU has a better offensive line than SC.  I think our team is coming together, learning, and improving.  Something that isn't often mentioned is the defensive scheming by Derek Mason.  I thought Vic Fangio was brilliant, but Mason has steadily proven himself and tonight was his masterpiece.

I still have concerns about quarterbacking, the offensive line, placekicking, and offensive playcalling, but they mostly improved in the second half.  I confess to having been being completely ready to send in Nottingham after the first half to give him a chance.  There is a reason I am not a coach.  I hope and expect that our coaches will teach these young players and that the offense will steadily improve this season, in which case this is going to be a really fun year to watch.

(09-15-2012, 09:11 PM)garvin link Wrote:That wasn't even a push -- the lineman was in front of the runner and dragged him two yards into the end zone. But -- honestly -- have you ever seen that called, even once? I don't think I have, never in my whole life.

I've seen it called, but only once.  1985 Chicago Bears.  William Perry grabbed Walter Payton and pushed/threw him into the end zone.  First called a touchdown, then called illegal use of hands on Perry, negating the touchdown.

Tonight, I was yelling at the TV over that play.  I think my girlfriend thought I'd completely lost my mind.  The refs totally screwed up, but thankfully it didn't matter.

In terms of ranking it--it's probably too early to tell--but I would guess when we look back on it, this ranks second to 2007. 2007 established us; 2012 reminded everyone we weren't going away. In college football, credibility and perception are so important. Whenever David Shaw or a member of the Cardinal coaching staff steps into a recruit's living room, he will have credibility because of 2012...(assuming we don't completely collapse or something the rest of the year. Which, to be honest, unless the offensive play improves, can't entirely be written off as a possibility.)

From what I understand, the 2007 victory was the largest upset in modern college football history.  We were more than 40 point underdogs that game.  As bad as Nunes played at times today, he had brilliant spurts of play as well.  Tavita Pritchard was plain awful.

Re: Final: Stanford 21, U.S.C. 14 - JeffInCorvallis - 09-15-2012

Pritchard converted the 4th downs when he had to.  Tonight was awesome but nothing beats Toby Gerhart and his OL cramming Power down their throats for an entire drive and scoring a TD.

Quote:Tavita Pritchard was plain awful.

Tavita was definitely NOT awful that day. His leadership qualities led that 2007 team to victory over $C. It was an amazing thing to see,

The U of O.

Andrew Luck's quacking nemesis, and one of the best teams in professional football.

Nov. 17.

At Autzen (spot the Quacks 14 just for being there)

Can the Cards do it?

Icing on the cake after tonight, but I hope they do.

And I live in Oregon.

Go Cards!

Where will Wilner vote Stanford and... - Redrum - 09-15-2012

what will be his excuse for placing Stanford no higher than 15?  I'm actually more interested in his excuse than his ranking of us.    My guess is some version of "No team with a QB as inconsistent as Nunes belongs in the Top [fill in placing here] "

Re: Final: Stanford 21, U.S.C. 14 - Spiny_Norman - 09-15-2012

Stat of the game - USC was1 for 13 on 3rd down.  I love that 9 different players had TFLs.  A game ball to Derek Mason.  What a great effort!

Re: Final: Stanford 21, U.S.C. 14 - CowboyIndian - 09-15-2012

My favorite in-stadium announcement tonight (aside from the final score): "U$C ball....4th down and 40"

Re: Final: Stanford 21, U.S.C. 14 - socalstanfan1 - 09-15-2012

Just stating the obvious here, but I'm so excited by this victory I can't help myself  :)

This is the single most validating victory in the brief David Shaw era.  For all the whisperers (and shouters) who have said Stanford will sink back to the days of Walt Harris and Buddy Teevens: TAKE THAT!!!  This goes a long way towards ending that talk, and showing people that the coaches have been developing a PROGRAM, not just a good team that relied on a couple of admittedly excellent guys, Harbaugh and Luck.  Congrats to everyone involved.

Also obvious: this defense is shaping up as very likely the best of the past few wonderful years.  We all knew the front-seven would be great, but the defensive backfield is suddenly showing some great potential.  Both Reynolds and Richards are growing into their roles; we suddenly have enviable depth at CB; Kyle Olugbode will presumably be back sometime to add greater depth to our safety positions, along with young Hoffpauir, and of course Usua Amanam.  Oregon is a different kind of beast, but I suddenly feel like we have the athletes to keep up with them.

I'm actually still not totally convinced that Nunes is right for the QB spot, but he certainly earned some more time, particularly with his play in the second half.  The OL should continue to improve, and if Peat can nail down the LT spot, then Yankey can settle back at LG, and that will help a lot.  Nunes and the coaches have to figure some way to involve the receivers more.  But this is relatively minor quibbling after a great win.

Re: Final: Stanford 21, U.S.C. 14 - estephan500 - 09-15-2012

Actually, SC's national title hopes, and Bark.'s Voldemort position, are, coincidentally, right about at 4th and 40.

Re: Final: Stanford 21, U.S.C. 14 - stanfan - 09-15-2012

I respectfully disagree that this win ranks behind 2007.  That was a spectacular upset.  However, not to take anything away from those who made the effort to win that game, we weren't really on SUC's radar.  They just plain overlooked us....understandably as 41 point dogs.  This was different.  We were the targets; this was the Redemption Game.  They had been pointing and preparing for this game for a year.  And our guys simply took SC's best shot and then rolled them.

Re: Final: Stanford 21, U.S.C. 14 - doubledub - 09-16-2012

I think there are plenty of other shaky quarterbacks in the Top 15...that said, tonight we won in spite of Nunes.  There were so many terrible throws you have to wonder if the TD to Ertz was Nunes getting his Mojo back or just a lucky throw.  At halftime, the radio guys on 1050 were talking about maybe putting in Nottingham if Nunes continues to have a scattershot arm.

Re: Final: Stanford 21, U.S.C. 14 - Nan3cy - 09-16-2012

So nice to watch the defense go on the field and not anticipate disaster... Obviously it's great when both the defense and the offense are great -- but somehow having a good defense is easier on the nervous system, it seems to me...

Re: Final: Stanford 21, U.S.C. 14 - Leftcoast - 09-22-2012

The U.SC win needs to be immortalized in the "Classic Hits" section.  I nominate this thread as it has it all - Stanford glee, shout-outs to the awesome D-line play, fourth-and-fourty, and an extra large helping of T.rojan schadenfreude but I'm open to other suggestions!
