I knew it. This string of televised games was too good to last. I've given up hope that the Pac-12 Network will ever be on DirecTV.

If you have had DirecTV for a long time, it may be time to switch. The Pac-12 almost can't give in to DirecTV now because many of the other deals would instantly get reset to the DirecTV terms. DirecTV will not act until people switch away. And if loyal super fans like you are unwilling to switch, then DirecTV probably is not seeing that many terminating service. If there are few actually leaving DirecTV because of the Pac-12 channels, then there are really very few viable reasons for them to pay the Pac-12 fees.

Where I live (Long Beach, CA) the local cable company doesn't carry the network, so I'd have to switch to Dish. There's no way I would ever switch to Dish. I'm ridiculously honest and high-moraled about things like pirated music and DVDs, but I'll be watching an illegal feed on October 27th. This is what the P12 and DirecTV have forced me to do.

Must have Charter in your part of Long Beach since Cox and Time Warner both have Pac-12 Networks. The "no way I would switch to Dish" statement is curious. But is EXACTLY what DirecTV believes about their customers. They believe their customers are far too loyal to ever switch away and simply don't need Pac-12 Networks. DirecTV customers don't need Pac-12 networks, and don't really want to watch those games that will not impact the BCS CG race. Although DirecTV took down that language from their Pac-12 statement recently, it is still what they believe.Â
In any event, don't forget to disinfect your computer after the game.
The Pac-12 Networks are already getting far more coverage than the BigTen Networks got in their first year. So the Pac-12 Networks are looking favorable. While a few blindly loyal DirecTV customers may not get to watch their favorite team, the ADs in the conference are probably far more excited about the millions that will come in each and every year. And Stanford has been on Pac-12 Networks more than 25 times now, and most of those sports would never have been carried on any other channel.
So I do believe, even with the DirecTV feud, that most ADs in the Pac-12 would actually say, "Thanks again, Larry!" It is just that they would actually say it in a way that would display unending appreciation for the increased visibility and money.

All of what Garvin said...plus, after some business dealings with Charlie Ergen and his slimy underlings, I wouldn't pee on them if they were on fire.

The channels it doesn't have, particular AMC. (Pac-12 fans are not the majority of television viewers in many households.) The inability to get the NFL Sunday Ticket package on Dish. It's not just some arbitrary quirk of nature that DirecTV has twice as many households as Dish and close to 100 percent of the sports-bar business.
Love AMC - Mad Men is my favorite show by a big margin. And yet, give me a choice between AMC and Pac-12 Networks and there is no choice. Nothing on AMC is live, and everything on AMC eventually gets to Netflix. Pac-12 Networks would win running away in my household. As AMC's programming is not geared towards kids this presumed household battle is between adults for others? My LOVE for Pac-12 sports would almost certainly carry the day in my household. NFL vs Pac-12? Presumably those are the same people in most households. Pac-12 (football + others) would win there too for me, but I understand that for many the NFL Sunday Ticket wins.
I completely understand why DirecTV is holding out. The idea that AMC, strong customer service or the NFL are more important to most Pac-12 fans is exactly DirecTV's position. So with that belief set in place DirecTV will likely continue to hold out for a couple of pennies a subscriber. Blind loyalty was, of course, a slight exaggeration. But all of these justifications are examples of loyalty to DirecTV, and it is what DirecTV is banking on.
For those that really, really want the Pac-12 networks, the Pac-12 has a solution available nationwide. Dish! Don't like Dish? Well that's a personal call, but it is not as if the Pac-12 did not find a viable option for their fans.
Literally, thanks to Wilner I am actually stuck in a DirecTV contract signed in late August. Wish I was not with DirecTV and would switch today if it was penalty-free. DirecTV has a rather expensive early departure penalty, so I am not switching and appear "loyal" to DirecTV. And yet, even that ~$460 termination fee is a justifcation not to switch, I COULD pay it and get my Pac-12 Networks.
But I am not blaming Scott or Wilner for my DirecTV choice or contract. I jumped in a bit early and bet on the wrong provider. My bad, but I am very happy that the Pac-12 is no longer losing TV revenue ground to the BigTen and SEC now even if it means I will now drive up and down the I-5 next Saturday just to watch 3 hours of Stanford Football against a very bad WSU squad.

I've been with Dish for quite some time now and I'm not sure where the poor customer service rap comes from. So far, I've had very good service from Dish (certainly better than I'm used to from my other information service providers past and present -- Comcast, Time Warner, AT&T, Cingular etc.) Recent
customer satisfaction studies seem to back that up even though the delta seems pretty small:
Quote:Among the larger companies, Verizon's FiOS service scored the highest, up 3% to 74. DISH Network (69), U-Verse (68) and satellite TV provider DirecTV (68) trailed Verizon.
The lack of some channels is certainly a valid criticism, especially the NFL content. Charlie E. seems to have more than his fair share of spats with various content providers but, hey, if i had to pick between AMC and the Pac-12 network, I know what i'm going with (especially since I don't really care for any of the team pro sports) :)

We've had Dish for a long time and it's been pretty good. Bummed about AMC, but as was noted, the shows will turn up on Netflix eventually...

This current situation should remain in place until the 2013 football season now.
DirecTV is not losing too many customers, and presumably very few will leave when the Pac-12 Networks are broadcasting Utah vs. Washington State in basketball at 10:30PM EST in December-March. I think we all can agree that DirecTV will have very few subscribers crying for baseball, softball and tennis in April and May. And there will be no real new content between July and late August.
Pac-12 & Pac-12 Networks have found a national provider. Those alum types that complain to the Pac-12 schools about the inability to see their teams are now given an option available nationwide. Some may want a different option, but the option the Pac-12 has produced is from a viable established content provider. Most of those in the Pac-12 footprint also could opt for any number of cable providers too. It is noteworthy that there are no ADs screaming for the Pac-12 to get on DirecTV ASAP, and if anything the ADs have worked hard to support Scott's tough stance. The AD's wanted Scott to get them more money, and that is what he has provided in a big, big way.
Sports bars in the Pac-12 footprint that cater to college fans probably have invested in Dish AND DirecTV by now. If they haven't they probably already lost their weekly Pac-12 alumni association group viewing business.
It seems like the steady state is here until next summer, maybe beyond.
In the end the customer choice might be between DirecTV without Pac-12 networks and Dish and others with Pac-12 Networks. DirecTV is counting on the idea that Pac-12 networks will not change customer preferences. If the members on this board represent the customer segment MOST likely to switch then I think DirecTV has made the savvy business move.
To re-phrase Sanders and Manning - "BAMM!! It's NOT on!"

Here's what I know about this subject:
Last year I was able to watch every Stanford game on my TV without having to change a thing. This year, not so much. Not an improvement as far as I'm concerned.
Yes, the Pac-12 has provided me with an option but it's a distasteful and inconvenient one. If you interpret this arrangement as satisfactory, I submit you must work for the Pac-12, the AD.....or SATAN! Yeah, that's it! SATAN!
Thanks again, Larry!

This year I'm still able to watch every Pac-12 football game on my TV (after switching from U-verse to Comcast, which is an improvement in some ways anyway), plus lots more games in other Stanford sports that interest me. So the arrangement is more than satisfactory for me.
That's a selfish view -- I do feel sorry for folks who have DirectTV or cable systems that don't carry the new network, and who can't or won't switch for whatever reason -- but hardly Satanic. ;)
