Tosh Lupoi.
By all accounts the 59er DL has been mediocre so far this year; I certainly haven't seen any great feats of strength. For having so many highly-rated recruits and such promise over the past two years, that's a disappointment. In addition, the 59ers have played our run tough in 2009-11, certainly tougher than anticipated. Is it a coincidence that the very year Lupoi switches, his new team plays us unexpectedly tough against the run? I'm hoping no.

... as stated AFTER their many-month-long conniption fit over his "betrayal'Â is that Lupoi actually was a
recruiting plus at Kal but nothing special when it came to actually coaching DL at their position. This, of course, contradicts a years-long love-fest for Tosh, but it made them feel better, so there's that.

Yes, one of the funnier "oceania has always been at war with eastasia" reverses I've seen.

Arguably Cal's best DL in 2011 has not played at all this year, Mustafa Jalil. Also slowed by injury has been their most explosive DE Todd Barr. Think of Stanford playing without Ben Gardner for an analog.

Didn't Jalil leave or get dismissed from the team?

I'm not surprised -- running the Lbyan National Transitional Council must have interfered with practices etc. But now that that distraction is dissolved, hopefully he can focus on football.

Jalil is listed as second string so he must be back from injury. And I hadn't heard anything about Barr being injured this year. Not sure I would compare him to Gardner though. They also lost LB Dave Wilkerson from Monta Vista for the year. LB Cecil Whiteside was let back on the team but doesn't play. LB Jason Gibson was lost for the year. Penn State transfer Khairi Fortt hasn't played a down I believe. And they also have some major injuries in the secondary. If we lose tomorrow it will be a monster upset.

The Bear's DL has been banged up all year. At various points of the year, Jalil, Tipoti, and Barr have been out. And as YM pointed out, they also lost two potential starting LBs for the year early.
They are now playing their two best CBs in Steve Williams and Kameron Jackson, because Jackson is better than the starter Marc Anthony. When you factor in Avery Sebastian, this California defense is as good as its been all year right now. They don't have much depth at LB or in the secondary right now, but Stanford can't sustain drives, so that lack of depth doesn't seem like something Stanford can capitalize on.
I honestly don't know how anyone could say a California win would be a big upset, considering Stanford is such a small favorite and how much Stanford has struggled on offense on the road.Â
Vegas says Stanford 25 California 22.
No way California scores more than 17.
