The Prank - Hank 91 - 10-22-2012

Here's a cool story about the fake Daily Cal put out by Stanford Daily staffers following the 1982 Big Game. A great read if you haven't already seen it.

Garvin, I had heard the story of the Pennzoil prank my frosh year in 1979 but was not sure it actually happened.  Glad to learn that it was true.  Maybe another reason that John Arrillaga does not want advertising to be permanently displayed on the scoreboard.

The senior who told me about the Peniszoil prank also shared Band lore like their famous Bluebonnet Bowl show.  Because the game was in Houston, the show was a tribute to America's space program.  During one formation they re-created the Apollo-Soyuz rendezvous and docking.  They formed a convex Apollo and a concave Soyuz which joined and then moved apart, joined and moved apart.  Each time a few band members trickled from Apollo to Soyuz.  Not sure how many people in the stands realized what was happening.

Those were the days.... when Hoover Tower made a regular appearance in the mobile formation and Trojans had a double meaning.

I still have my slightly yellowed copy of the fake Daily Californian.  Some extras were printed and distributed on the Stanford campus.  For years classmates of mine, when under duress, would cry, "Life isn't fair!  I swear to God it isn't!".
