Shaw Puts Ice Pick in Fitzgerald's Heart - Hank 91 - 10-25-2012

Well, not really:

Quote:Shaw thought there were around nine guys who played great defense, including redshirt senior Chase Thomas, who coach thought played maybe the most complete game of his career.
Shaw was especially impressed by a pass rush move Thomas used to get to Cal quarterback Zach Maynard. The move is called an ice pick spin move, a term which no members of the media recognized on Tuesday. This led to the press conference highlight of the season, when Shaw demonstrated the pass rush move on San Francisco Chronicle writer Tom Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald and Shaw have had some tense moments over the course of the season, leading to friendly jeers from around the room sarcastically egging the two on. That moment seemed to signify to the world that Shaw has moved forward from some of his most defensive moments earlier this season, going so far as to add, “Tom and I are buddies.”

This is from the Daily. Here's the link to the full article, which also reports that Alex Carter will be starting this week and that Ty Montgomery is practicing again.

I side w/ Fitzgerald, even if Shaw smoked him w/ his move - Redrum - 10-25-2012

All in all,  Fitzgerald's been a force for good.  It's not like his reporting is making up stuff about what we've all seen on the field. If Shaw is defensive because of the uneven press coverage ( i.e. not uniform praise)  then he's just going to have to grow up.
The alternative approach to covering a team is the Chron's  K.al beat writer Crumpacker,  who until this season has mostly been a press agent for K.al's football program.  Guess he figured out there's no way to dress up a pig.

Shaw is also a bit spoiled.  Until year 3 of the sainted Harbaugh,  the Chron hardly believed real football was being played down on the penninsula.  Fitzgerald seemed like a part-time stringer, w/ Kal coverage seeming to run about double the coverage of Stanford.  This was a Chron editorial decision, not Fitzgerald's.  The Stanford improvement has come mostly  for the off-game day coverage throughout the week.  There was a time not too long ago where it seemed Stanford got one pre-game article and one game coverage per week.

I wonder if Shaw sees it that way. Most coaches would not hold a press conference if they weren't obligated by their school/league, from what I understand. True, getting in the paper increases your recruiting profile, but all in all, I think these guys would be happier going from the game/practice to the film room to focus on next week's opponent. In my opinion, Harbaugh benefited from being under the radar those first few years, so no one would scrutinize his coaching mistakes. Shaw has had the burden of being a rookie/sophomore with national expectations on his program.
