Re: Rose Bowl game thread - socalstanfan1 - 01-01-2013

Have to question some of the offensive play calling in the second quarter.  Taylor basically doesn't touch the ball almost all quarter? Going away from the power running game and passing on first and second downs in that last drive?  (not counting Taylor's final carry, which answered my earlier question).  The D needs to make some adjustments at halftime, and the O needs to get back to what got them here: heavy doses of Kulabafi, and using Hogan as a dual threat.

For those out of the country, you can watch the game here:

This one is reminiscent of the Oregon State game.

We get a couple of quick touchdowns, then we turn around and surrender the momentum.

Not sure why we started throwing the ball every down, especially since Hogan got out of sync.

Oh well, we'll see if we can regain it in the second half.

Re: Rose Bowl game thread - Kirk72 - 01-01-2013

Socalstanfan1:

I'm also baffled as to why Pep Hamilton called 4 straight passing plays after we got the ball with three and a half minutes left in the half. We were having success on the ground and needed to chew up some clock or at least make them use a time out or two to get the ball back.

Wisconsin has caught three deflected balls. I hope they've used up their allotment of good luck for the game!

Thanks!  In China, where the Great Fire Wall is up and blocking, but hopefully these work.

Re: Rose Bowl game thread - Gauss - 01-01-2013

As Shaw said, It's been the small things that cost us: the pass off the helmet, the pass tipped by Thomas, Tarpley's near interception, and 3 slightly high passes from Hogan.

That said, Ball is getting 5 yards a carry, and Phillips 8.5 yards a pass attempt, so clearly the defense needs to start plugging holes. I like our chances if the D steps up a bit, and Hogan settles again.

Re: Rose Bowl game thread - akCard - 01-01-2013

Too many "almost" plays by the D: almost tackles for loss in the Wiscy backfield, passes that were actually defended (which instead went for big completions), almost an interception.

Uncharacteristic penalties, too, on both sides.

If Wilkerson got more runs like his one big run, I'm happy seeing Stepfan get some rest but Stanford's running game is getting slowed down and Kevin is looking like the situation is overwhelming him.

I'm hoping that some of this is just rust and can/will be corrected in second half.

Happy New Year, all!

Wilk is good for one of those per game - Redrum - 01-01-2013

Might have used up his allotment.

Their motion game is making out pass rush more conventional.  Rushing 3 DL and 1 LB.  Not really getting pressure.  They are doing to us what we are trying to do to them.  Maybe we're seeing the downside of Hogan and his ability to throw or his mental grasp of the playbook.  So it is w/ rookie QB in BCS bowl.

Re: Rose Bowl game thread - M T - 01-01-2013

TV showed the band on the field at the half, spelling "FUNNY".
More time shown of Wisconsin band playing elevator music.

Half time stats:
Stanford:
Rush  99 on 15 tries  (Taylor 9 for 44, 2 for 27)
Pass 124 on 10 tries (7 completions)
First Downs  10 (5 rush, 4 pass, 1 penalty)
Time of possession 12:33
3rd down conversions 1/4
Sacks 1 for 10 yards
KO returns 2 for 35 total yards
Punts 2 for 73 yards
Penalties  3 for 23

Wisconsin:
Rush 151 yds on 28 tries  (Ball 17 for 87, Phillips 3 for 46)
Pass  68 on 9 tries, 7 completions (3 off Stanford touches)
First downs: 13 (8 Rush, 3 pass, 2 penalty)
Time of possession: 17:08
3rd down conversions 5 of 8
4th down conversions 0 of 11
1 punt return for -2 yards
2 kickoff returns for 28 total yards
2 punts for 97 yards
3 penalties for 25 yards

Re: Rose Bowl game thread - akCard - 01-01-2013

Just noticed: didn't Stanford's white uni pants used to have a red stripe?

Re: Rose Bowl game thread - 82 Card - 01-01-2013

Under Wisconsin stats it says:
Quote:3rd down conversions 5 of 8
4th down conversions 0 of 11
I'm assuming the one key double fire unintentionally. Don't think it's possible to have more 4th down conversion attempts than 3d down conversion attempts.

Re: Rose Bowl game thread - estephan500 - 01-01-2013

Color commentator:  ""Frankly I don't think Stanford is being very aggressive right now in its playcalling."

Re: Rose Bowl game thread - 82 Card - 01-01-2013

Announcer says the hit by Richards on Hamond was clean. Didn't explain the reasoning.

Not this year!

Re: Rose Bowl game thread - 82 Card - 01-01-2013

I never new there is a version of hitting the kicker (without touching the ball) that does not result in a first down.

Stanford defender led with his shoulder and hit Wisconsin receiver in the gut. Textbook example of clean, but hard, hit.

I thought there was something about the receiver being somewhat defenseless since he was going up for the ball.

Re: Rose Bowl game thread - estephan500 - 01-01-2013

This is some serious tough football in this game.

Re: Rose Bowl game thread - Hurlburt88 - 01-01-2013

absolutely.  Alvarez is a great coach . . . time for some chess moves from Shaw

Re: Rose Bowl game thread - JohnR34231 - 01-01-2013

The offense has totally gone into the tank.

I hope the defense is ready for a big fourth quarter, because we are going to need them to.
