Rose Bowl Rating hold up -
FarmBoy - 01-02-2013
Quote:The 2013 Rose Bowl Game Presented by VIZIO, in which No. 6 Stanford defeated unranked Wisconsin 20-14, earned a 9.6 overnight, the highest on cable television outside of ESPNs NFL games since the 2012 Bowl Championship Series National Championship. The telecast is down 3 percent from a 9.9 rating for last years game, which saw No. 5 Oregon defeat No. 10 Wisconsin 45-38 in the highest scoring Rose Bowl Game ever.

I must say, I'm a bit surprised there wasn't a measurable drop in the Rose Bowl viewership. I thought the country would be totally disinterested in watching Stanford play an unranked Wisonsin that "back doored" its way into the game. I think I saw somewhere that a media expert estimates that BCS bowl participation provides a university with more than $10M worth in free advertising. Stanford definitely received some good PR last night with the way the boys played and conducted themselves.
Now when will the verbal commitments from blue chip recruits start ramping up?

Next year when we have more than 11 scholarships to give. Relax, the recruits are interested.

Herbstreit was practically recruiting for Stanford at the end, pitching the great education plus NFL opportunities. He said it once on the broadcast and again here:

Thanks, Deepred -- Herbie sounds as if he's channeling one of us! (Speaking of which -- has anyone ever seen Kirk Herbstreit and Glenn Garvin in the same room? Just sayin'...)Â ;)

ESPN's breakdown of ratings by market illustrates the challlange faced by Stanford in filling the stadium for home games:
Quote:n the markets of participating teams, the Rose Bowl Game Presented by VIZIO averaged a 31.1 rating in Milwaukee, the second highest rating for an ESPN bowl game in the market on record (back to 2000). ESPNs coverage earned a 12.3 rating in San Francisco, the markets third highest-rated bowl on ESPN networks. The telecast also averaged a 20.7 in Birmingham, 19.8 in Columbus, 15.6 in Dayton and 14.0 in Portland.
It's not clear whether the "third highest rated bowl" means this year or some longer time period. It would be interesting to know what the two higher rated ones were.

Hello!!!
Most of the people in the SF TV market that cared about Stanford were in Pasadena. And far too many Wisconsin supporters elected to stay home after going the last two years. Positive spin on that ratings story.
Though in truth we all know that Stanford's Bay Area support is super soft. UCB football got more coverage in December than Stanford, so that's about all you need to know. Thankfully, these bowl games don't care about the number of season ticket holders, they really care about hotel room and restaurant reservations and on those fronts Stanford does very well now.
FWIW - I am sure no other bowl game was DVR'd or Tivo'd more than the Rose Bowl in the SF market.

I'm not sure exactly how many viewers those ratings amount to. Even if all the people in the stadium had stayed home, I doubt it would have boosted the bay area ratings above the level of Portland. The Bay Area is just not all that into college sports.

Well, that supports their point, then, if most of the people in the SF TV market that cared about Stanford amounts to 40,000 people.

Does the SF market include the entire Bay Area (like an MSA)? If so SF really has nothing to be ashamed about. You're just going to find it difficult to pull down big ratings #s in a brobdingnagian market. 12.3 strikes me as pretty good.
