Lance Anderson - USFBullsfan - 01-05-2013

Hello Card nation.

Apparently Lance Anderson interviewed for the South Florida Defensive Coordinator job today. The connection seems to be that Willie Taggart knows him from his time at Stanford.

He is kind of an off the radar guy for us in Tampa. So, I was looking to get Stanford fans' opinion of him.  I notice that he was named Scout.com's 2012 national recruiter of the year.  That is certainly encouraging, but I doubt he has many FL recruiting ties.

Any insight would be much appreciated.

Congrats on your great season and Rose Bowl win!

It'd be a real bummer for us if he left. Good, solid position coach and an important guy for recruiting. Not sure what he brings to the scheming side of the job, but he's coached linemen and linebackers and knows what he's doing.

Re: Lance Anderson - socalstanfan1 - 01-05-2013

Like WIM, I'm not too clear on Anderson's role in creating defensive schemes.  But he seems to have a great feel for recruiting, and combined with Taggart, who is himself an ace recruiter, the two of them would make a really formidable team.  I think, regionally, Anderson has worked the SW, while coordinating the overall recruiting effort and helping to guide prospective players through admissions (someone correct me if I'm wrong on that).  I seem to see his name linked to a lot of the kids we brought out of Arizona (Andrus Peat, Drew Terrell, Devon Carrington).

Should he go, I'm thinking we are OK with the LB coaching, assuming that Shaw makes a good hire, and Kotulski was satisfactory with the ILBs (they obviously played well this year.)  With recruiting, Mike Sanford has had good success in his short time here, so I wonder if he would take on a more prominent role.  edit: Just noticed on the official Stanford athletic website roster that Sanford is already listed as recruiting coordinator.

Always tough to lose good coaches, but if we only lose one or two position coaches after this great season, that would be great.

Drukarev reports Anderson's been offered but is undecided: https://twitter.com/StanfordRivals/status/287777797148143617

Re: Lance Anderson - USFBullsfan - 01-05-2013

Thank you for the insight.

I would imagine this would be a tough decision for him.  I am a USF alum, booster, and fan, but to me Stanford is the best school in America.  It seems that everything Stanford touches turns to gold.  Willie Taggart for example  :).  If he had to leave that great program, moving to Tampa and being part of one of the top up and coming programs wouldn't be a bad spot for him.  Long way to move though for a guy who is a life long west coaster.  It should be interesting to see how this plays out.

Thanks again and best of luck to you guys going forward.  I always pull for Stanford and enjoy watching your program play.

What a post.  Go Bulls!  Stay Lance!

Tough decision for Anderson - Redrum - 01-06-2013

Positives:
IF Anderson sees himself as a head coach some day, then he's got to work on his resume (both in real experience terms and the piece of paper).  A coordinator position is the well-trodden road to the HC Gate.

IF Anderson wants to make it to the NFL, then he's got to work on his resume.  A coordinator position is also the well-trodden road to the NFL Gate, but there is a faster way (see negatives).

Satisfaction and self-image:  Maybe Anderson has a very secure sense of self and handles risk well.  People who do have that positive sense of self and take those risks by-and-large feel it is worth it.

Negatives
Is Taggart likely to be a  HC in LOVE with offense and hoping the defense can just show up?
Will some unfair college football gravity pull the Bulls down as it has before?

Any sensible Stanford staffer knows that getting to the NFL is more like NASCAR high-speed drafting than any other profession.  He had a first hand look at the coaching careers boosted when Harbaugh left and many staff followed tucked in behind.  Right to the head of the pack.  IF  Anderson wants the NFL  and thinks Shaw will go in 1-3 years,  then going to USF means he's dropping out of the line of coaches drafting behind Shaw.

Is life good in Palo Alto at a school that is doing very well and doesn't seem out of upside?  Knowing the kind of kids he's going to be recruiting and working with at Stanford  might make it tough to work at a middling program that depends on recruits who usually are not top drawer in talent or academics.

Re: Lance Anderson - terry - 01-06-2013

Lance Anderson is the primary coach who talks to the admissions office. He reportedly has an almost photographic recollection of every recruit's transcript. He is a key guy in our recruiting process. The role he plays is invaluable to us, but irrelevant to anyone else because nobody else has the same admissions issues. I hope we can keep him.

Anderson's staying: https://twitter.com/gregauman/status/288307424895578112

That's very good for us.

Good luck, USFBullsfan -- I'm definitely rooting for Taggart and I'm sure a lot of Cardinal fans are too.
