Re: Official PAC12 2013 Schedule - terry - 01-10-2013

Sept. 7    San Jose State
Sept. 14  at Army
Sept. 21  Arizona State
Sept. 28  at Washington State (in Seattle)
Oct. 5      Washington
Oct. 12    at Utah
Oct. 19    UCLA
Oct. 26    at Oregon State
Nov. 2      Bye
Nov. 7      Oregon (Thursday)
Nov. 16    at U.S.C.
Nov. 23    California
Nov. 30    NotreDame

A few thoughts --

Ten teams in the conference have games scheduled on August 31, so Stanford is getting a late start. Fortunately, our first conference opponent, Arizona State, also is getting a late start, so we will be on equal footing with them when we play them on Sept. 21.

The Arizona State home game on Sept. 21 will be on freshman orientation weekend, which is nice for the students. So there will be only one home game before students start arriving on campus. Much better than this year's schedule.

I'm definitely making the road trip to Army on Sept. 14. The Utah game on Oct. 12 seems like a great opportunity for another road trip.

I don't like Thursday games. But I guess that ship has sailed.

The four biggest games of the season in terms of hype, anticipation, and rivalry come in four consecutive weeks at the end of the season. It's hard to bring the highest level of intensity for four straight weeks. When we had the same schedule in 2009, we had two brobdingnagian wins against Oregon and U.S.C., but then dropped a game we should have won against California. That will be an interesting stretch of the season for us. . . .

Re: Official PAC12 2013 Schedule - Farm93 - 01-10-2013

Playing @WSU in September is definitely better than November.  Getting them in Seattle is even better.
The idea that we get a bye to prepare for Oregon is perfect.  A Thursday game played during East Coast Primetime is so important for the program.
Getting a mini-bye to prepare for the SC game also looks great.

The second half of the schedule is really tough.

Based on the schedule I would guess that UCLA is reunion weekend???

Edit: Oh, checked Pac-12 and they say UW is the reunion weekend.  That is very early in the season for "MY" reunion.
Edit 2:  GoStanford.com says the UCLA game is reunion weekend.  Hmmm, have to believe GoStanford.com would know.

Also note from gostanford.com that Pac-12 championship game will be on Dec. 7 -  A SATURDAY.

Yeah, if it was SJSU or some other game no one aside from loyal fans would want to watch. But Oregon?? C'mon... there's a good chance that will be the highest profile game of the weekend in the entire country. That should be on primetime on Saturday, possibly with the Gameday crew on the Farm.

There are benefits to Thursday (as have been mentioned) -- likely reduced Oregon fan travel, almost-bye before the game (although both teams get that benefit, I think it helps us more because Oregon has unique quirks) etc. But national exposure is not one of the pluses. Not for this game.

Re: Official PAC12 2013 Schedule - Farm93 - 01-10-2013

Thursday games get decent ESPN coverage, and more important very good Friday morning coverage.  For the Pac-12 I think these non-Saturday games allow the conference to escape the SEC lovefest that takes place on Saturdays.

I also love the Gostanford.com comments on the schedule.

Stanford's 2013 home schedule features six opponents who played in bowl games this past season, plus the 116th edition of the Big Game.

Ouch!!  Apparently there are 6 important games with winning teams, and then there is a game with UCB.

Re: Official PAC12 2013 Schedule - pefloresjr - 01-10-2013

It looks to me like it features EIGHT teams that played in bowls and that game against the 38ers.

Cheers,
Pete F.

38ers, now THAT'S mean!  :D

Re: Official PAC12 2013 Schedule - FarmBoy - 01-10-2013

One other potential impact of having one of our brobdingnagian home games on a Thursday: it's not able to be used as a game to host recruits. Granted, I'm not a recruiting expert, so maybe November games of off limits regardless, but I assume most players we're recruiting will have games of their own on Nov 8th, so they wouldn't be able to make it. It would have been nice to have the Oregon game atmosphere to show recruits Stanford at its best in supporting the team.

Uh .......

CAL, Cal, C.al = Cee Ayy Ell

(Just checking.  When Yvonne get that look in her eyes you just never KNOW what new word substitution will pop up.)

There are pluses and minuses on both sides of a Thursday game. I'm pretty much morally opposed to anything that doesn't take place at 12:30 or 1:00 PM on Saturday, but here we are in Wonderland.

I did not notice until today that a certain Bay Area school lacks a Thursday or Friday game.  The other Pac-12 team without a Thursday or Friday game? Colorado

Apparently if you are coming off a losing season and have a new coach, then you are not worthy.    Reminds me of the Ted buddy days when every game seemed to start at 2PM.  Hate Thursday starts?  Just lose a lot.  Problem solved.

Here is the breakdown by my quick count...
SC - 3
UCLA, Utah, Washington State, UW, Oregon and Oregon State - 2
UofA, ASU and Stanford - 1
Colorado and UCB - 0

No doubt he was talking about college football scheduling when he said that.

I think he used the word 'fool' instead of 'please' but they both work.

Re: Official PAC12 2013 Schedule - pincemob - 01-12-2013

Below are the non-conf games and my personal grade of them.  a few thoughts:

- Kudos to Tennessee for playing another Pac 12 series.  They are one of very few SEC schools to play the Pac 12.
- ASU plays ND.  I vaguely recall ND playing a series with WSU a few years ago.. they now play 3 series w/ Pac 12 schools.  If the Pac 12 pulled out of those series, ND would probably have to join a conference, which I think would be a good thing as they have such a low bar to steal a BCS slot.
-  Our new conference members are doing our BCS chances no favors with their OOC schedules
- UW gets a rematch with Boise, fresh off a bowl loss
- SC playing 13 games due to Hawaii exemption

ASU: A.  Sac St, Wisconsin, ND
Cal: A.  Northwestern, Portland St, Ohio St.
Stanford: A.  SJSU, Army, ND
Oregon:  B+.  Nicholls, Nevada, Tennessee
UW: B+.  Boise, Illinois, Idaho St
USC: B+. Hawaii, BC, Utah State, ND
UCLA: B-.  Nevada, Nebraska, NMSU
WSU: C+.  Auburn, S. Utah, Idaho.
OSU: D.  Eastern Wash, Hawaii, SDSU
Utah: D.  Utah St, Weber St, BYU
Arizona: F.  NAU, UNLV, UTSA
CU:  F.  CSU, Central Arkansas, Fresno

I'm sort of enjoying the "great in '38" theme.  Like my new signature line?

For the BCS, both computer- and voter-wise, it's better to beat a cupcake than to lose against a powerhouse.

Under Stanford Control: B+. Hawaii, BC, Utah State, ND

Hum, this was also discussed after Wilner's SOS ranking.
U.SC's schedule seems harder to me, having ND at South Bend, and Utah State being somewhat better than SJSU (they both lost their coaches, and Utah St beat SJSU by 22 points last year).
Hawaii-BC also seems to be somewhat harder than lowly Army.

At least U.SC SOS should be equal to Stanford's, in my opinion.

That said, I like the Pac's OOC. It's not excessively tough, but is hard enough that we could reap some respect if we do well.

Note to Terry... - 71Bear - 01-12-2013

Make sure that you take the longer of the two tours that are offered at West Point.  It will be well worth your time.  Along with a stop at Hyde Park, that was the highlight of our trip up the Hudson Valley some years ago....

Also, I think the stadium there is the most beautifully situated stadium in America.  Right alongside the Hudson, the view is truly remarkable in he Fall.

Have fun.......
