Big Visit - stanfan - 01-11-2013

Nice article on Big Visit weekend by Andy D at Cardinal Reports.

Re: Big Visit - OutsiderFan - 01-11-2013

Question regarding the big visit weekend.

Do Stanford's coaches tell recruits who had planned to come on a January visit to not bother coming if they were turned down by admissions?  In other words, is it safe to assume all this weekend's visitors have been admitted?  It seems kind of silly for Stanford to spend money on visits from recruits who they know will not be admitted, not to mention to pointlessness of a trip by a recruit to a school he is not going to attend.

Obviously everyone visiting in January is hoping to learn they were admitted on their trip if they haven't already, but it would seem pretty awkward for guys who come, to learn they were denied, especially in the presence of guys learning they were accepted.

Re: Big Visit - LuckE2Bhere - 01-11-2013

While your point is well taken, and I doubt they'd give a kid a "skinny envelope" in front of other recruits (though I could see discussing it at the end of the weekend, if they did happen to get such unfortunate news while the kid happened to be in town), it doesn't necessarily follow that they've all been admitted.  It would seem to imply that none of them have been rejected (at least not yet), however, and I believe that some have been admitted.  As I understand it, those decisions sort of "come in when they come in".  An admission letter is a great "icing on the cake" element to a visit to Stanford, but you don't have to get one this weekend (or before) to ultimately get admitted.

EDIT: To answer your first question, I can't imagine why a recruit would take an official visit to Stanford after learning that they had been turned down by Admissions, so I think it's safe to say that it hasn't happened to kids who are still planning on taking those trips.

Re: Big Visit - oldguy - 01-11-2013

From following message boards for a few years, I would think than all of the visitors are in the ballpark for admission, if not already admitted but holding back on commitment. However, sometimes the holdup is slow submission of the application, slow receipt of recommendations, or waiting for Fall grades. I could see a late ding on any of the above, a poor interview, or a nondisclosed incident.

Re: Big Visit - fullers - 01-11-2013

There have been several recruits over the past three years who have attended the big visit in Jan only to find out (a week or so later) that they were not accepted.

According to this article, Durham Smythe's visit seems to be going well - at least at the hotel.  I've stayed at every hotel near campus.  I've never gotten cupcakes.  I hope these aren't some sort of minor recruiting violation.

It wouldn't shock me if it was.

:P.  :D ???

Re: Big Visit - DC - 01-12-2013

Sounds like discrimination against non-recruits.  (sarcasm)

Re: Big Visit - DC - 01-12-2013

I really hope Devon Allen decides to come here and that he is good.  There is plenty of immediate playing time for any WR who can run good routes, create separation, and has good hands to catch the ball.

It's extremely  common for good hotels to send up complimentary baked goods, wine, flowers and so on for guests celebrating special occasions.

Especially cupcakes with a special touch, a tree on top.

Just so we're clear, the official symbol of the City of Palo Alto is a tree. The tree is not an official mascot of Stanford sports. I can't imagine any violation involving a hotel promoting the symbol of the town in which it operates.  ;-)

First possible signing from this weekend is.... - Hey - 01-13-2013

....Thomas Oser, the OL from Harvard-Westlake, Jonathan Martin's high school.  Still just a rumor at this point.

It probably isn't a violation, but why do I have this image of some NCAA bureaucrat feverishly reviewing regulation manuals trying to figure out if he can nail us on it.

Three-star for everyone; very solid offer list with Oregon, Vanderbilt, Mississippi and Utah all aboard.

Here's how good hotels treat their guests:

Re: Big Visit - jayasena - 01-17-2013

I'm certainly no expert on NCAA rules but I don't get the concern about cupcakes. Recruits are allowed to be fed during the visit at the school's expense, aren't they? And the last time I checked, cupcakes are neither a controlled substance nor age-inappropriate for high school students.

Re: Big Visit - yvonne - 01-17-2013

I don't really get it, either. I fully expect players to be wooed during a recruiting visit. Isn't that the whole point?

I suppose the fear is that this is coming from the hotel, and not from Stanford itself. My point is that it's customary for hotels to send food and other tokens to guests. Really good hotels send multiple niceties. Hello? It's called the hospitality industry!
