U.S.C's Football Season Was So Bad... - 76lsjumb - 01-14-2013

...they just fired their baskteball coach:

Of course, that would be the same coach that recently beat us.

Here's one time I'm hoping that Wilner is right - yvonne - 01-14-2013

According to this Rule of Tree article, Dawkins' contract may have a clause that allows us to cut bait before the extension kicks in. That means this year or next.

The fact that Bob Bowlsby, the guy who hired Dawkins, is not the AD is somewhat promising news, although I suspect that if Bowlsby really did put something like that in Dawkins' contract, he wouldn't be skittish about firing him.

Muir's a basketball man--I trust he knows what the right decision is going to be.

I know there are some examples of amazing interim coach stories, but generally I think it is better to let the coach stay for the full year especially since basketball offers so many chances to turn a bad season into an OK season.

The massive Galen center was virtually empty, so SC had to do something.  At least Maples is smaller, so it does not look as bad even if there are only 3,000 people at the game.

It will not be my money on the line to payout Dawkins.  Still, Dawkins does not appear to be the short, medium or long term answer for Stanford basketball.  And it is worth pointing out that if he does manage a miracle turn around over the next season or two, then he would likely go to Duke in the next 3-5 years.

It's not so hard to understand, garvin - Redrum - 01-14-2013

"I cannot imagine why Johnny Dawkins would sign a contract extension that works only for Stanford: If you're doing a good job, we've got you locked up, and if you're doing a crummy job, we can just kick you to the curb at no cost."

Maybe Dawkins parses his  contracts with the same gift he has for in-game adjustments.

I have never weighed in on the Dawkins debate, but I do not see how he survives this season.  Dawkins' name could be substituted for O'Neill's in all of Haden's comments about his firing. Listening to people speculating about O'neill's replacement this morning made me realize that there are a lot of coaches I would be much more happy with who would likely accept a Stanford offer--St. Marys' Bennett and Long Beach State's Monson are two examples.

I like Bennett; he seems like a very solid choice. I suppose, like the constant Chris-Petersen-to-Somewhere rumors, you've got to call Shaka Smart and Brad Stevens, just in case.

Hasn't Bennett turned down multiple offers from big time programs (or at least teams from big time conferences.) Maybe if the primary reason for turning them down was to stay in the Bay Area, Stanford will be attractive?

Barring a miraculous turn around, Dawkins should go.
