Bummer for Josh.
But, it's an opportunity for Dallas Lloyd and others to step up and make a play for QB2.

The best that could come out of it is another year of backing up somebody else, whether it was Nunes or Hogan. With Nunes hurt, he'd still be a backup. New York, New York, it's a wonderful town. Columbia's up and the Battery down.
I do wonder if Nunes was playing hurt and this is some shoulder repair work that he would have done
last year but he put it off because Spring practice was his chance to compete for the starting job. Of course, we don't know whether it was his throwing arm.

The importance of depth on the squad: hopefully Nunes' injury is not too serious and he's all set for camp in August. Adds a bit of intrigue for Spring ball, now with Lloyd presumably getting more reps in practice. Also, depending upon the extent of Nunes' injury, it makes things potentially a bit more interesting for young Mr. Burns entering this fall, though coming out of the HS program that he did, I would assume he needs a redshirt year to learn the more sophisticated offense. (as is the case with most hs qbs)

Other nuggets from Shaw's press conference today (according to my memory of what I saw on Twitter):
- Yankey is moving back to LG, setting up a battle at LT. I believe Peat, Austin, and Davidson were all mentioned as contenders there. That may or may not mean that Murphy is now an RT.
- Four-man battle at center between Wilkes, McFadden, Reihner and Shuler. Apparently there was no mention of Danser being in the mix at center, which surprised me a bit.
- Vaughters is moving to OLB. Shores up our depth at OLB and relieves some of the logjam at ILB.
- According to Shaw, Hogan has just scratched the surface of what he can do.
- Contenders for the kickoff return job include Ty M., Keanu Nelson and Barry J. Sanders.
- Patrick Skov will miss at least part of spring practice with an injury.
- Shayne Skov will miss the first half of spring practice due to a school suspension relating to his DUI. I'm not sure why this suspension is only happening now.
- Barry Browning is also injured. Can't remember the prognosis on his return.

One more note: Geoff Meinken is healthy.

He probably feels bad for Nunes but doesn't regret his decision. Being second in line is no better than being third in line for someone who wants to be on the field.

There hasn't been hardly any mention of Evan Crower since he joined up, but I was really impressed with his high school highlights coming in. I also really liked Dallas Lloyd's and Kevin Hogan's highlights so I can understand why he doesn't more press, but I'm still anxious to see what he's got.

There is no truth to the rumour that he injured himself while throwing an 8-yard screen pass that actually went 8 yards.
(BTW, I really am a big Nunes fan; I just couldn't pass up the chance, especially given the official story...)

Why didn't anybody mention the most important part of the announcement?
Quote: They begin the first of two spring practice sessions Feb. 25 and finish the workouts with the spring game April 13 at Stanford Stadium.
Re: Josh Nunes injured - pincemob - 02-16-2013
Shaw's language on the injury is interesting. It makes it sound like perhaps it was related to some time-tested technique or drill which went awry. Either that or something fluky, like falling down while texting. Stanford has had fluke injuries in the past (Troy Walters broken wrist before the Rose Bowl comes to mind, or whatever happened to Jordan Williamson in the USC warmups last year) so there was obviously something very unusual about this one. Â
Also from that article -- was it well known Kyle Murphy was going to become a TE? Wasn't he a 5-star lineman recruit? 6'7, 280 seems large for a TE. Hopkins also seems big for a TE.Â

With all due respect to Josh, that really was funny.

That jumped out at me, as well. Toilolo and Kaumatule are listed in the 250-265 range.

Fitzgerald messed up there. Murphy's still a tackle.

That might just be an error. Other accounts I've read of the same press conference have mentioned Hopkins and Plantaric playing TE for spring practice, but not Murphy.

Avert your eyes now. This is a painful story.
In warmups before the 2011 USC game, Williamson is reported to have torn his groin while practicing onside kicks.Â

Yes, I think Norcalcard was asking about Williamson's injury before the 3OT game in 2011 in which Eric Whitaker had to kick FGs and PATs.
