Now that I know we aren't the only crazy ones, the next time somebody asks me how to get their kids into Stanford I'm gonna tell them to cancel cable.

Thanks for the link. I hadn't seen Fleener's blog before. Some good stuff there!

Solid stuff. I'm going to read his STS paper.

The Fleeners may not subscribe to cable, but the Luck's apparently still refuse to join the 21st century smart-phone-as-a-necessity culture:

I've read about this during the draft, but it's funny to see it still going on as well as the pics posted on twitter. I'm sure he takes a lot of crap from teammates for that. it's nice to see him stick to his guns.
Another anecdote that just popped in my head is when Madsen signed with the Lakers. Apparently he was still driving his beat up car from college when he arrived in LA. Shaq took him shopping for a new SUV on day one, apparently. I wonder if a true NFL superstar actually took Luck phone shopping if he would break down and upgrade. Something tells me he wouldn't.

If the CARDboard had a mobile app, I'm sure Luck would upgrade to an iPhone Galaxy 7G.

I am sure he wouldn't upgrade. I bet he strongly appreciates a few things about that phone -- its simplicity and its small size. To "upgrade" to something that has a giant suite of features you don't want, and is a big rectangle as every phone is now, is not a neutral concept but quite an annoying idea. I suspect I am roughly in the same ballpark as Luck myself in the phone preferences dept... (That plus shouting for the Cardinal may be the only two things we have in common.)Â

Gee, Estephan, I've always imagined you as a strapping guy with a scraggly neck beard!

My wife uses essentially the same phone as Luck, one refresh cycle newer. She wouldn't think of upgrading. She needs rugged, big buttons, good battery life, easily pocketable and no butt dialing. Fancy phones don't offer that.

I use a flip phone. Doesn't have an scratchable/breakable display face! Also, very cheap phone plan. I use wifi for internet connection constantly though.
Also, Fleener's STS paper could use some style polishing, but it's good content.
