No more Legends and Leaders - terry - 04-20-2013

The Big 10 will re-align when Maryland and Rutgers join the conference in 2014. No more Legends and Leaders -- just East and West . . .

East -- Rutgers, Maryland, Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Indiana

West -- Purdue, Northwestern, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska

Rutgers and Maryland as Big 10 schools.  I just don't get it.  On the other hand, it's about time they got rid of the Legends/Leaders division names.  Whoever came up with that one was paid way, way too much.

Re: No more Legends and Leaders - CompSci87 - 04-20-2013

Now I'll no longer be tempted to sophomorically call them Limpers and Leakers.

It's all about the TV markets in New York, Washington, and Philadelphia.

Re: No more Legends and Leaders - CowboyIndian - 04-20-2013

Tough call: Indiana in the East, Purdue in the West. There must be a whole second of longitude difference...maybe not even that.

Re: No more Legends and Leaders - yvonne - 04-20-2013

Anyone who follows the Pac-12 is not allowed to joke about geographic challenges.

Re: No more Legends and Leaders - Leftcoast - 04-20-2013

With Penn St, Ohio St and Michigan all on the same side of the split why not just call their two conferences First Class and Economy?

Re: No more Legends and Leaders - Leftcoast - 04-20-2013

Ah .... You left out Nebraska - that helps the split equity.  How about First Class and PREMIUM Economy?

Re: No more Legends and Leaders - ChicagoCard - 04-21-2013

Would have been interesting had the Pac-12 opted for a divisional split between natural rivals, i.e. Washington and Wash St in opposing divisions and so on. Something Larry Scott once talked about.

Re: No more Legends and Leaders - 82lsju - 04-21-2013

they should have gone

Animals -- Maryland, Penn State, Michigan, Northwestern, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa,

Humanoids -- Purdue, Michigan State, Indiana, Illinois, Nebraska, Rutgers, Ohio State

Re: No more Legends and Leaders - yvonne - 04-21-2013

A Buckeye is not humanoid, even if Brutus is.

True, it is neither animal nor humanoid, and since I grew up in Ohio I already knew this factoid.  I went with Brutus as humanoid to get an even number of teams in each division.......

Nope.  "Factoid" substantially predates USA Today -- it appears to have been coined by Norman Mailer in the early 70s.

Losers seemed too obvious, so I avoided that one. Laggards is excellent, though.

If anybody's wondering why I haven't posted for a target rich environment of snark.  It's because I have a certificate of completion from the Little Buckeye pre-school.

Rutgers and Maryland as Big 10 schools.  I just don't get it.

It's all about the TV markets in New York, Washington, and Philadelphia.

Just because the team plays nearby, doesn't mean the city residents really care. Maryland is a big school with a pretty strong following, though I'm not sure how much folks in DC follow them. B1G probably picks up some eyeballs in Baltimore, though. But my impression of Rutgers is that it doesn't have a very strong following in the area. Philly and New York are pro-sports towns (similarly, I don't know how much of the Denver market the Pac12 picked up through UofC. That's pretty much Broncos territory.)

Re: No more Legends and Leaders - washingtonismoney - 04-22-2013

Here are the order of priorities, sports-wise, for Washington:
1. Redskins
2. Redskins
3. Redskins
4. Nationals
5. Redskins
6. Wizards/Capitals (if good)
7. Georgetown/Maryland basketball
8. DC United
9. Redskins
10. Redskins
11. Redskins
12. High school football
13. What is college football?
14. Redskins
15. RGIII.

In a delightfully postmodern move, picking up Maryland and Rutgers isn't about winning new fans per se -- though I'm sure the B1G wouldn't exactly object -- it's about getting more cable subscribers' fees.
